West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Friday, June 16, fans are going to want to bring their sleeping bags and a sense of adventure to Fifth Third Ballpark. That's because that night's Whitecaps game is going to feature an elephant throwing out a first pitch, a ferris wheel in the parking lot and the chance to camp out on the field postgame. "We've got a big night planned for next Friday," said Whitecaps marketing manager Mickey Graham. "Before the game, we've got a carnival going on in the parking lot complete with rides and an elephant. Then, after the action on the field wraps up, everyone is invited to come down and pitch a tent in the outfield for the Sandy Pines Campout on the Field." The Sandy Pines Campout on the Field is open to anyone - all you need is a sleeping bag. Tents are allowed, but you can't use tent stakes. Once all the campers are situated in the outfield, you can sit back and watch the movie Madagscar on the Whitecaps video board. From there, campers are on their own until a 7:00 a.m. wake up call from Whitecaps staff. "Every year, the campout on the field is a great event and we're proud to be a part of it," said Sandy Pines park director Max Gibbs. "There's nothing better then sleeping under the stars - except maybe sleeping under the stars on a baseball field. The campout is a great family event and that's what we're all about at Sandy Pines." But before people can pitch their tents and roll out their sleeping bags, the field at Fifth Third Ballpark will play host to an elephant. Laura, an 8,500 pound African elephant who received national attention last year when she threw out a first pitch before a Whitecaps game, will be back for a repeat performance. When gates open, Laura will be in front of the ballpark, greeting fans, and she'll then move inside right before the game to throw a first pitch. "You never know what you're going to get when you come to a Whitecaps game," said Graham. "Baseball is just the appetizer - especially on a night like Friday, June 16. We've got an elephant throwing a first pitch, carnival rides and a campout on the field - not to mention some great baseball. There really is something for everyone."
