West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
FT. WAYNE, IN - Luke French pitched seven strong innings and the Whitecaps offense put up a double-digit hit total for the second night in a row as west Michigan topped Fort Wayne, 8-4. The âCaps have won three games in a row overall and five consecutive road games.
French allowed one run and scattered six hits over his seven innings to earn a win and improve to 5-3.
Rafael Mendez led the Whitecaps offense from the ninth spot in the batting order. The first baseman went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Even when Mendez did not get a hit, his fly ball to right advanced Jeramy Laster from second to third en route to a run.
Mike Hollimon and Cory Middleton also scored two runs each for the Whitecaps.
Hollimon is 4-for-5 in the series with four runs scored and two walks. He also became the first Whitecap to steal more than one base in a game this season when he took second and third on the way to the tying run in the second inning.
Fort Wayne struck first by scoring in the first inning on a single by Will Venable. The left fielder also had an RBI single in the first inning on Tuesday.
A sacrifice fly by Middleton drove in Hollimon in the second to tie the score, 1-1.
Mike Hernandez had the go-ahead hit - an RBI single in the third when West Michigan scored twice to grab a 3-1 advantage.
Pedro Cotto scored in the third and finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
Following a three-run fourth and single runs in both the sixth and eighth, the Whitecaps built an 8-1 lead.
Fort Wayne rallied for three unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a throwing error by second baseman Max Leon that put lead off man Mike Baxter at second base. Brandon Gottier later knocked a three-run double that trimmed the lead to 8-4.
All three of the runs were unearned and charged to Jake Baxter.
