Whitecaps Roster Returns with Championship-Level Talent

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps will have plenty of players with winning experience headed to Comstock Park, with 14 players who were part of the 2025 Midwest League title team on their way back to highlight the club's initial 2026 roster, unveiled in conjunction with the Tigers.

Familiar faces headline the 2026 returnees, with pitcher and Detroit Tigers No. 18 Prospect (MLB Pipeline) Lucas Elissalt, along with outfielder and No. 29 Prospect Jackson Strong headed back to LMCU Ballpark after impressive finishes to their 2025 campaigns in West Michigan. Among those joining them are a group of significant Midwest League Title contributors in pitchers Carlos Lequerica, Hayden Minton, and CJ Weins, along with position players Woody Hadeen and Garrett Pennington, and Patrick Lee. Moreover, the group arrives with 20 players who finished last season with the Florida State League champion Lakeland Flying Tigers, playing for new Whitecaps manager René Rivera.

Among the returnees, Pennington's reappearance to West Michigan featured a superb finish to his 2025 campaign, hitting a team-best .321 after his arrival with 15 doubles and 16 RBI in 36 games. Hadeen, who hit .375 in the 2025 postseason, returns to Comstock Park among a vast number of players who played roles as significant contributors during the home stretch of the 'Caps championship season in 2025. Among the initial Whitecaps' 30-player active roster, 17 players have previously been on 'Caps rosters, while three have appeared with the club in multiple seasons.

"Coming off of the incredible 2025 season, both on and off the field, we are more than excited to get the 2026 season started," Whitecaps Vice President and General Manager Jim Jarecki said. "The Tigers minor league system continues to be one of strong development and internal competition that shows winning results."

The Tigers were named a Top-5 farm system in Major League Baseball by multiple scouting services entering the season, marking the second consecutive year they've placed within the Top 5. Last season, Detroit made the playoffs for the second straight year with a roster that included ten former Whitecaps on their postseason roster, highlighted by outfielder and two-time all-star Riley Greene, and back-to-back AL Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal.

Rivera makes his West Michigan managerial debut with a coaching staff with various levels of experience. Pitching coach Dan Ricabal returns after a season at Double-A Erie, and hitting coach Matt Malott is back for a second year. Other members of the coaching staff include first-year bench coach Cole Roberts, the son of Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, and head athletic trainer Nick Wheeler, a returnee.

"Having René Rivera leading the team, the excitement is sky high," Jarecki said. "Seeing the combination of the players that will be returning from last season and the guys coming up from Lakeland - with both teams winning the title - we can't wait!"

The Whitecaps' season opener is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, at Classic Park against the Lake County Captains at 6:35 pm, with the Home Opener scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, against the Great Lakes Loons at 6:35 pm. The first 2,000 fans through the gates that night receive a replica championship ring, presented by Lake Michigan Credit Union. Plus, if it's not 60 degrees or warmer at first pitch, everyone in attendance will get a ticket for another April game. The home opener and nearly 20 additional dates throughout the season include Farm Bureau Insurance Fireworks and several other promotions with food and fun! A limited number of multi-game, group, and individual tickets for April and May games are still available.
