Lake County Captains News Release
EASTLAKE, Ohio - In their 2026 season opener, the first game of a scheduled three-game series, the Lake County Captains (0-1) fell to the West Michigan Whitecaps (1-0) by a final score of 1-0 on Thursday night at Classic Auto Group Park in Eastlake.
In a rematch of the 2025 Midwest League East Division Championship Series, four West Michigan pitchers combined to limit the Captains offense to a two-hit shutout. After tossing six scoreless, hitless innings against Lake County in Game 2 of last year's Division Championship set, Whitecaps RHP Hayden Minton (ND) logged another four scoreless, hitless frames on Thursday night, striking out five and walking one.
The difference on the scoreboard proved to be in the top of the fifth inning, when West Michigan 1B Garrett Pennington hit a two-out RBI single off Captains LHP Melkis Hernández (L, 0-1) to drive in the game's lone run.
Both of Lake County's hits came in the home half of the fifth inning. 1B Nolan Schubart, MLB Pipeline's No. 27 Guardians prospect, ripped a double on the first pitch of the half-frame, logging the Captains' first hit of the season. Three batters later, DH Ryan Cesarini hit an infield single down the first-base line, beating Pennington in a race to the bag after he made a diving stop.
The Captains eventually threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning, drawing three walks against West Michigan RHP Carlos Lequerica (W, 1-0) to load the bases. But Lake County RF Jace LaViolette, MLB Pipeline's No. 8 Guardians prospect, struck out to end the frame.
In the following inning, Lake County put together one more rally to potentially tie or win the game. After back-to-back strikeouts from Whitecaps RHP Logan Berrier (S, 1), Captains C Bennett Thompson drew a two-out walk. Cesarini then hit a bouncing ball to Berrier that deflected off his glove, resulting in an error that put the winning run aboard for Lake County. But 3B Luke Hill, MLB Pipeline's No. 30 Guardians prospect, struck out to end the contest.
Captains RHP Justin Campbell (ND) got the Opening Day start for Lake County. The right-hander tossed a pair of scoreless innings in his pro debut, allowing two hits and no walks, while throwing four strikeouts in 30 pitches (23 strikes).
The second game of this week's scheduled three-game season-opening series between the Captains and Whitecaps is scheduled for Friday night, April 3, at 6:35 p.m. It will be Lake County Fish Fry's Night at the ballpark, where the Captains will suit up as the Lake County Fish Fry's for the first time in franchise history. The game will be broadcast on the Bally Sports Live App, the MiLB App, and StreamGuys, with social media coverage courtesy of @LCCaptains on X and Instagram.
Notes to Know
- Thursday night marked 1,396 days since RHP Justin Campbell last pitched in a game, previously doing so for Oklahoma State on June 6, 2022 against Arkansas. The 37th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft had his pro debut delayed due to undergoing a pair of elbow surgeries and a wrist surgery on his pitching arm.
- 1B Nolan Schubart hit a double in his High-A debut on Thursday night. The 2025 third-round pick out of Oklahoma State tallied four doubles across 20 combined regular-season and postseason games with Single-A Lynchburg (now Hill City) last year.
- RHP Logan McGuire worked a pair of scoreless innings out of the Lake County bullpen in his High-A debut on Thursday night, striking out two and walking one. The 2024 17th-round pick out of Georgia Tech threw 75 strikeouts to just 11 walks during the 2025 regular season with Single-A Lynchburg (now Hill City).
