Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - State of Wisconsin 6, Clinton LumberKings 0 over the past six contests as the L-Kings dropped another decision to the Beloit Snappers, 9-5 on Wednesday night. After losing four straight on the road to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the LumberKings have seen the cheese state dominance extend to games one and two against the Snappers at Alliant Energy Field.

The loss also marks the sixth of the year to Beloit, who swept a four-game series in Clinton back in mid-May. The LumberKings did get on the board first, scoring a run in the third off Snappers starter Kyle Waldrop. Joe Kemp led off the frame with a double to center, then came home with two-outs as Matt Smith singled to left.

The next inning belonged to Beloit as the Snappers posted four runs off L-Kings starter Jake Rasner in the fourth. Rasner loaded the bases before giving up singles to Edward Ovalle and Paul Kelly to plate three runs. Danny Berg added a sacrifice fly to score Ovalle as the Snappers jumped out ahead, 4-1.

Five more runs came across for the Snappers in the sixth. Rasner started the inning but failed to get an out, loading the bases once again and surrendering a big bases-clearing double to Berg. Reliever Julian Cordero came on to allow two more runs in the inning as the Snappers broke the game wide open, 9-1.

A late comeback bid happened in the bottom of the eighth as the LumberKings scored four runs off Beloit reliever Alexander Smit. With Smith already aboard, Freddie Thon reached on a fly ball that came out of the glove of Dwayne White in right field. Terry Blunt then delivered an RBI groundout to score Smith. Thon came around on an infield single by John Whittleman, and both Whittleman and K.C. Herren would score on a double belted to center by Kemp. Danny Vais came on from the pen to end the comeback bid, getting the final out in the eighth and working a perfect ninth.

Waldrop (W, 5-2) allowed just one run on eight hits through seven complete innings. He struck out four batters and did not allow a free pass. Rasner (L, 3-6) struggled through his five innings of work, surrendering eight runs (six earned) on six hits. He struck out five in the game while walking one.

Kemp's 3-for-4 night marked his second-consecutive multi-hit game. He picked up a pair of RBI's in the losing effort. Smith, Whittleman and John Mayberry all posted two-hit nights as the L-Kings combined for 12 hits.

The loss drops the LumberKings to 19-40 on the year, and the six game slide is a new season-worst. The Snappers improve to 30-28. The two teams meet again tomorrow night, game time scheduled for 7:00. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or live on the internet at www.lumberkings.com.
