
Four Bees Named to the All-Star Team

Burlington, IA (June 7, 2006) - The rosters for the 2006 Midwest League All-Star Game were announced yesterday and four members of the Burlington Bees have been selected to represent the Western Division: 2B Josh Johnson and P's Gilbert De La Vara, Matt Kniginyzky, and Chris Nicoll. All-Stars are selected through votes of the 14 field managers. The All-Star Game will be played at John O'Donnell Stadium in Davenport, IA on Tuesday, June 20th.
Johnson has been selected as a starter in the game. He is the first Bees' position player to be selected as a starter since SS Danny Sandoval in 2000. Johnson is batting .281 with 1 home runs and 18 RBI. He leads the Midwest League with 41 walks and with a .444 on-base percentage. He also leads all MWL second baseman with a .985 fielding percentage, committing just three errors in 201 total chances.
De La Vara is 3-3 with a 3.38 ERA and leads the team with 19 appearances and six saves. He has struck out 42 batters and walked just nine in 37.1 innings pitched. Between April 25 and May 25, he made ten appearances and didn't allow a run in 19.1 innings of work.
Kniginyzky is 6-2 with a 3.12 ERA in 12 starts. He is tied for second in the league in wins and is second in innings pitched with 75. He also leads the club with 66 strikeouts which put him just three out of the top five in the league. Kniginyzky was the Bees' Pitcher of the Month for both April and May. His next start is on Friday night when the Bees kickoff Mt. Pleasant Community Weekend with fireworks.
Nicoll will start tonight against the Peoria Chiefs at Community Field. In nine starts, he is 3-3 and ranks eighth in the league with a 2.33 ERA. Since joining the team from extended spring training on April 21st, Nicoll has fanned 53 batters in 54 innings and has held opponents to a .179 batting average against him.
The Bees had four players selected to the All-Star Team in 2001, 2004, and last season, but all four players didn't participate in any of those years. C Scott Walter and RHP Micah Mangrum were promoted before the game in '01. LHP Dusty Hughes was promoted before the game in 2004. Last year, Geraldo Valentin came down with strep thrat the weekend before the game and was quarantined to his apartment for the break.
