Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (June 7, 2006) "" The Burlington Bees (29-28) had two on with no outs in three different innings, but failed to score as the Peoria Chiefs (33-26) turned three double plays in a 5-2 victory at Community Field tonight. The Chiefs lead this series 2-0 and now lead the Bees by three games in the standings.
Chiefs' starter Todd Blackford (5-2) worked six shutout innings, but pitched himself out of trouble almost all night. He walked the first two batters of the bottom of the first, but they never advanced further. He walked the first two batters in the fourth, but induced JP Lowen into a 6-3 double play. Jose Duarte led off the fifth with single for the Bees first hit and Ethien Santna walked, but Blackford got Josh Johnson to bounce into a twin killing that stymied the threat. Mario Lisson led off the sixth inning with a single, but the Chiefs turned their third double play behind Blackford who struck out four and walked five.
The Chiefs got on the board in the first against Bees' starter Chris Nicoll (3-4). With two outs, Jesus Valdez and Ryan Norwood singled, a passed ball moved them to second and third, and a walk loaded the bases. Mark Reed hit a slow roller up the third base line that went for an infield hit and an RBI, but Norwood rounded third and got tagged out by Lisson to end the inning. The Chiefs added two more runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, Yusuf Carter hit a bouncer in the hole between short and third. Valentino Arce fielded and threw two second, but Johnson dropped the ball for an error and two runners scored on the play. Nicoll got through the inning, but came out after a leadoff walk to Jake Muyco in the sixth. The recently named All-Star walked a season-high five and matched his season-high with eight strikeouts. Rayner Oliveros came in and allowed a single to Davy Gregg. Robinson Chirinos hit a foul pop down the first base line. Johnson caught the ball and fired to the plate to prevent Muyco from scoring, but Gregg tagged and advanced to second. With the infield in, Dylan Johnston hit a bouncer off the chest of Brady Everett at first. Everett recovered to get Johnston at first as Muyco scored and then Valdez lined his third hit of the game to drive in Gregg and cap the Chiefs scoring. Oliveros finished the final four innings and allowed the one run on four hits and struck out two.
Justin Rayborn followed Blackford in the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning, but in the eighth surrendered a two-run homer to Everett that got the Bees on the board. It was Everett's second homer of the year and he has now hit safely in five straight games and 14 of 16 he's played in with the Bees. Rayborn finished the inning and Scott Koerber came in for the ninth and retired the Bees in order to pick up his first save of the season.
The Bees and Chiefs continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field on a Thirsty Thursday sponsored by The Sombrero Bar & Grill. RH Michael Penn (4-1, 3.06) will try for his fifth straight win for the Bees against LH Jesus Yepez (1-2, 3.75) for the Chiefs. The gates open at 6:00. All soft drinks and beer are 2-for-$3 throughout the game. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
