Dayton Dragons News Release

Lansing, MI - Heading into the second game of the four game series with the Lansing Lugnuts (35-23) the Dayton Dragons (28-32) were 21-12 when scoring the first run of the ball game and 6-20 when the opposition scores the first run of a game. Dayton not only got the first run of the game but scored the first seven runs of the game on route to an 8-5 win over the Lansing Lugnuts, snapping a three game losing streak.

The first four Dragons to swing the bats against Lansing starter Russ Savickas (LP, 2-1) reached base with hits. Mike DeJesus led the game off with a double to the right field corner and moved to third on a base hit to left by Mike Griffin. DeJesus scored on a hit and run infield chopper by Jay Bruce, who picked up his Dragons best 42nd RBI of the season. Habelito Hernandez followed the Bruce single with a double off the wall in left and Dayton led 2-0.

Griffin got into the RBI act in the second inning with a two out, two run home run to left center off Savickas that gave the Dragons a 4-0 lead. In the third Dayton was at it again adding another run, this one coming on a SAC fly off the bat of Josh Holden. With a 5-0 lead heading into the fourth, Lansing pulled Savickas and went to the pen to bring in Adrian Martin (ND). A one out double by Bruce put another runner in scoring position. One batter later with two down, B.J. Szymanski hammered a Martin pitch over the wall in deep left center for a two out opposite field homer and a 7-0 Dragons lead.

Carlos Fisher (WP, 5-3) was cruising along heading into the home half of the fourth inning. After a lead off single to open the game for Lansing from Sean Shoffit, Fisher retired the next ten in a row he faced until Cory Patton came up with two out in the fourth. Patton clobbered a Fisher offering over the wall in left cent and Lansing was on the board at 7-1. The Lugnuts would put the next five hitters, six in a row including Patton, on base. Lansing picked up five hits and Fisher issued a walk as Lansing got back to within three at 7-4. Following the Patton homer, David Hicks picked up an RBI single with runners on the corners to cut the lead to 7-2. After a walk, Brian Bormaster batted in a pair of Lugnuts with a single to left.

Dayton added a run in the top of the sixth picking up an unearned tally off Martin on an error by Lansing first baseman David Hicks. DeJesus led off the inning with his second double of the night and with two down moved to third and came home when Hicks booted the grounder off the bat of Hernandez.

Bo Lanier (ND) replaced Fisher heading into the seventh and was outstanding in his 2.0 innings of work. Lanier did not allow a hit and only permitted only one base runner on a fielding error in the eighth inning. Lanier struck out three Lugnuts on the night. Blake Hendley (ND) tossed the ninth inning, giving up a run on two three hits to make the final score 8-5 as Dayton held on to snap a three game losing streak.

The Dragons and Lugnuts play game three of the four game series Thursday night at Oldsmobile Park with a 7:05 PM first pitch. RHP Zach Ward (4-0, 3.42 ERA) will get the start for Dayton, while Lansing counters with RHP Aaron Tressler (2-2, 1.65 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons pre game show at 6:30 PM.
