FOX CITIES STADIUM -- Ray did it again. For the third time in twenty-two days, Kane County Cougar starting pitcher Jason Ray beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. For the second time this season, e pitched a complete game against the Rattlers. Kane County held on to beat the Rattlers 3-2 in game one of a doubleheader. Anthony Recker homered, doubled, and scored a pair of runs for Kane County.
Wisconsin (36-22) had an early opportunity. Luis Valbuena and Nick Prosise had back-to-back singles to start the second inning. But, Ray got out of the inning.
Recker blasted a 2-1 pitch from Ruben Flores over the wall in left to lead off the fourth inning. That home run was the first hit in the game for the Cougars (36-22) off Flores.
Wisconsin had another chance in the fourth inning. Valbuena walked and Prosise reached on an error to start the frame. Curtis Ledbetter bunted both runners into scoring position. But, Ray again got out of the inning. This time with a popout and a strikeout.
Kane County padded their lead with a two-run rally in the top of the sixth off Roman Martinez. Anthony Recker doubled with one out. Jose Pineda doubled home Recker. Isaac Omura followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0 Cougars.
Wisconsin rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning. Casey Craig blooped in a two-out, two-run single to leftcenter to get the Rattlers to within 3-2. Craig stole second and went to third on a throwing error. But, Ray got Valbuena to ground out to short for the final out.
Ray gave up two runs on five hits and struck out three to win his sixth straight decision.
Game two of the doubleheader will be starting shortly.
