Kernels stunned by Rowlett's walk-off walk

June 7, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Cedar Rapids Kernels battled back from a five-run deficit to force extra innings before falling to the Swing of the Quad Cities 8-7 in 11 innings.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th thanks to a single, a throwing error on a sacrifice attempt, and an intentional walk, reliever Chris Howell (1-4) walked Casey Rowlett with the bases loaded to bring home the winning run.

Rowlett was responsible for the winning run for the second straight game in extra innings. On Tuesday night Rowlett belted a walk-off two-run homer in the 12th inning to give the Swing a 2-0 win.

Rafael Cruz and Ryan Aldridge combined for five scoreless innings of relief to keep the Kernels in the game . The Kernels used RBI singles by Marco Albano and Hainley Statia in the eighth to tie the game at seven.

Swing hurler Jason Cairns pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win as the Swing moved to 28-29. The Kernels fell to 26-34, once again equaling their worst mark of the season. The loss marks the third time the team has dropped five straight.

Starter Tommy Mendoza was at times brilliant on Wednesday, but ultimately allowed nine hits and seven runs in five innings of work. Swing starter Kyle Sadlowski gave up five runs on eight hits over 6 1/3.

Mark Trumbo helped put the Kernels in the driver's seat early with an RBI double in the second before scoring on a single by Stantrel Smith.

The Swing pushed a run across in the fourth inning before exploding for six runs in the fifth inning thanks to a little help from the Kernels defense. With a runner on first base, Luis Cotto lofted a high fly ball to center that Smith called for, causing left fielder Madison Edwards to end his pursuit of the ball. Smith then watched as the ball fell to the ground for what was ruled a double. That opened the gates for the Swing as David Nelson belted a two-run triple to clear the bases and spark the uprising.

Cedar Rapids fought back with a single run in the sixth on an RBI single by Trumbo before also adding two runs in the seventh. Statia launched an RBI double off Sadlowski then scored when reliever Scott Vander Weg allowed a single to Dallas Morris.

The Kernels were not quiet at the plate on Wednesday as they tallied 14 hits in the setback to the Swing. Trumbo was 3-for-5 while Statia, Morris, and Brett Martinez each managed to collect two hits each.

Both teams will meet again Thursday evening at John O'Donnell Stadium for a 7 p.m. contest along the banks of the Mississippi River. Right-hander Andy Hill (1-1) will face Swing right-hander Cory Meacham (4-3) in a game that can be heard on 1600 AM ESPN The Zone.
