Victoria, BC - Three Victoria Salmon Kings' skaters earned multiple points as the Steelheads saw their three-game unbeaten streak end in a 3-1 defeat to the Salmon Kings at the Saveon Foods Memorial Centre on Friday night.

The Steelheads (22-17-2-1) are now 2-2-0-0 against the Salmon Kings (19-26-0-1) this season, while the victors have won five straight, which is a franchise record. Furthermore, the victory pushes the Salmon Kings to within eight points of the Steelheads in the West Division standings.

The Salmon Kings took a 1-0 lead early in the first period on a shorthanded, unassisted tally by their leading goal scorer, Wes Goldie. Goldie got to a loose puck along the right wing boards in his defensive zone and chipped the puck past Marty Flichel, creating a two-on-one rush. Goldie then moved into the Steelheads' zone and ripped the puck from the right circles off the far post and past Steve Silverthorn (24 saves) for his 27th of the season. The shorthanded marker was the fifth man disadvantage goal the Steelheads have allowed this season.

That was the only tally in the first period, in which the shots favored the Steelheads 12-9.

Just 57 seconds into the second period the Salmon Kings increased their lead to 2-0 on an even-strength goal by defenseman Steve Lingren. The veteran defenseman took a feed from Goldie in the low slot and beat Silverthorn cleanly for his fifth of the campaign. Jordan Krestanovich gathered the second helper on the play. Then late in the period the Salmon Kings converted on a five-on-three power play to pad their advantage. Third-year Salmon Kings' forward Ryan Wade poked home a loose puck that had trickled through Silverthorn for his sixth of the year at the 17:38 mark of the stanza. Lingren, who took the initial one-timer from the point and Jordan Krestanovich got the assists.

Through two periods, the Salmon Kings led 3-0 despite being out-shot 21-18.

Colin Shields got the Steelheads on the board with his 10th of the season, and his third since joining the Steelheads, at 12:32 of the third period. Taggart Desmet cycled the puck deep in the Salmon Kings' defensive zone and took a side angle shot that caromed off the pads of goaltender Bryan Bridges (32 saves) and into the left wing corner. From there, defenseman Travis Wight kept the play alive by feeding Shields, who wheeled around the top of the left circles and into the slot before snapping a shot just inside the left post.

For the contest, the shots favored the Steelheads 33-27, as they dropped to 13-9-1-0 on the road this season. The Steelheads went a dismal zero-for-eight on the power play, while the Salmon Kings ended one-for-five.

The Steelheads wrap up their five-game road trip, playing their last game in British Columbia this season against the Salmon Kings on Saturday, February 3. Faceoff is at 8:05 p.m. MST. Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the all-new, print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
