Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH- The Dayton Bombers scored three third period goals en route to a 6-3 home victory over the Wheeling Nailers at the Nutter Center on Friday night.
The Bombers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening period of play. Joe Cullen finished off a play set up by Justin Maiser and Brent Walton with a wicked wrist shot over the shoulder of Nailers starter Brian Gratz at the 12:02 mark. Later in the first, Cullen then returned the favor to Maiser by clearing the puck to center ice. Maiser then proceeded to skate the puck all the way around the net, then snuck a quick shot up under the cross bar to pick up his second short handed goal of the season and give the Bombers a 2-0 lead at the 17:24 mark. The lead would stand through the remainder of the first period.
In the second, the Bombers added to the lead again this time on the power play and once again Maiser was the man. Coming off of a shot from the point by Scott Ford, Cullen tipped it across to Maiser who slammed it home to make it 3-0 at the 5:06 mark of the second period. At that point it looked like the Bombers were already well on their way to another win, but Wheeling had other ideas. The Nailers Joe Guenther cut the Bombers lead back down to two with a short handed goal of his own at the 7:37 mark. Then later in the second Ryan Moren pinched down from the point and slid one past Bombers starter Adam Berkhoel to cut the lead to one on the power play at the 16:29 mark. With just under 30 seconds left, the Nailers capitalized on a Bombers turnover, as Jon Smyth snapped off a quick wrist shot to tie the game at 3-3 going into the third period.
It didn't take long for the Bombers to regain momentum and the lead and the go ahead goal would tell the story of the game. Once again, Justin Maiser put himself in the right spot, crashing the net to finish off a rebound, pick up the hat trick and give the Bombers a 4-3 lead just 52 seconds into the third period. Wheeling, trailing by one late in the third decided to play aggressive by bringing up their defenseman and the Bombers made them pay for it. Defenseman Ryan Reid fired a tape-to-tape pass the length of two blue lines right to Yannick Tifu, who made a beautiful deke and wrapped it around Gratz to put the Bombers up 5-3 at the 14:06 mark. Tifu then added to his totals and the Bombers as well with an empty net goal with less than two minutes remaining to cap off the 6-3 victory.
Dayton is now 21-13-4 and 10-6-2 at home this season. They are still without a loss against the Nailers going 4-0-1 in the five games played.
