Pensacola Ice Pilots News Release
PENSACOLA - The Pensacola Ice Pilots saw their three game winning streak come to an end on Friday night at the hands of the Columbia Inferno. Three second period goals proved to be too much as the Ice Pilots dropped a 6-2 decision to the Inferno in front of a crowd of 4,160.
The Ice Pilots also saw their good play on home ice halted as they suffered their third loss in their last eight games at The Hangar.
After killing off two penalties to start the game, the Ice Pilots managed to net the game's first goal when David Wrigley's shot beat Todd Ford up high and it was 1-0. Nikita Korovkin and Dwayne Hay earned helpers on the goal.
The Inferno tied the game up 21 seconds later and then took the lead late in the first stanza on the power play and it was 2-1 after 20 minutes.
The difference in the game was the second period as Columbia notched two goals in the first minute, and then added a third at 4:57 and it was 5-1. Dan Sullivan tried to fire up his fellow teammates when he got into a fight with Justin Sawyer.
The Ice Pilots made it 5-2 when John Hecimovic finished off a great pass from Greg Watson at 10:19. The Blue and Gold had two power play opportunities early in the third period in an attempted comeback, but Todd Ford turned aside everything that was shot his way.
Columbia rounded out the scoring with a final goal early in the third period.
The Ice Pilots had just three power plays in the game and went 0 for 3, while the Inferno was 1 for 7.
Goaltender Michael Mole suffered his first loss in three games for Pensacola, facing a total of 38 shots. The Ice Pilots had 32 shots, including 14 alone in the final 30 minutes.
