Kostopoulos, Power Play Lift Penguins Past Phantoms
January 10, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - A three-point night from Tom Kostopoulos and a pair of 5-on-3 goals by the power play unit helped the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 4-1 win over the Adirondack Phantoms at Glens Falls Civic Center.
Despite being on the penalty kill four times in the first period, it was the Penguins who were on top, 1-0, after 20 minutes of hockey. Nick Drazenovic helped open the scoring when he knocked down an outlet pass in the far corner of the Phantoms zone and found Kostopoulos alone in front of the net. The Penguins captain cut across the crease before sweeping the puck past the right leg pad of Phantoms goalie Cal Heeter at 13:32.
Adirondack was able to tie game, 1-1, at 6:57 of the second as Kris Newbury won an offensive-zone faceoff back to Jason Akeson, who blasted the one-timer inside the left post.
A minute before the halfway point of the period, consecutive penalties to the Phantoms would give the Penguins a full two minutes of 5-on-3 power play time. Kostopoulos put Wilkes-Barre/Scranton back ahead when he accepted a backdoor pass from Drazenovic at 10:20 and roofed a shot from the bottom of the near circle for his second tally of the night and 14th of the season.
Fifty-two seconds later while still on a two-man advantage, Kostopoulos set up Brian Dumoulin trailing late into the Phantoms zone for a wrist shot from the harsh marks that made the score 3-1 for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
In the third frame, Adirondack poured on the pressure and outshot Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, 13-4, but Penguins goaltender Jeff Deslauriers turned them all aside as part of a 31-save performance that raised his record to 15-9-2.
Harry Zolnierczyk added an empty goal with 45.8 seconds remaining to complete the scoring.
The Penguins return home to face the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 7:05 p.m. Tune into all the live game action on AHL Live, www.sportshub102.com or HD-2 Channel 102.3.
