Cleveland Monsters News Release
ROCKFORD, IL- Despite tying the game three times over the course of the evening, the Lake Erie Monsters (17-14-0-3) fell short by a 4-3 score on the road to the Rockford IceHogs (17-17-3-2) Friday night. Brett Clark, Matt Hunwick, and Guillaume Desbiens scored for the Monsters in the loss, while Andrew Agozzino and Mark Olver extended their point streaks to five games with assists. The Monsters and IceHogs will be back on the ice for the finale of their four-game season series Saturday night at 8:00 PM in Rockford.
Terry Broadhurst, with an assist to his brother Alex Broadhurst, gave Rockford a 1-0 lead with 17 seconds left in the first period, but the Monsters refused to head to the first intermission trailing. Colin Smith sent a puck across the offensive zone in the final seconds of the period, and Brett Clark rifled a shot top-shelf from the top of the right circle to tie the game at 1-1 with 1.2 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Andrew Agozzino also assisted on Clark's second goal of the season. Both goals in the first period came on a four-on-four sequence.
In the second period, the Monsters again bounced back from a Rockford goal. Jeremy Morin scored at 7:43 of the second period, but at 13:42, Mark Olver spotted Matt Hunwick cutting up the left side. Olver found the defenseman with a pass in the left circle, and Hunwick sent a shot top-shelf to beat Rockford goalie Kent Simpson; Hunwick's seventh goal of the season.
With Rockford on the power play, Drew LeBlanc tipped an Adam Clendening point shot past Sami Aittokallio at 2:04 of the third period to give Rockford a 3-2 lead. Guillaume Desbiens, in his return to the Monsters lineup after missing 12 games, found a loose puck and fired a shot from the right circle to tie the game at 3-3 at 14:23 of the third period. Markus Lauridsen and Mike Sgarbossa, who returned after 25 games missed due to injury, assisted on Desbiens' third goal of the season.
Rockford scored the eventual game-winner when again, a Clendening point shot was redirected past Aittokallio at 17:37 of the third period. Garrett Ross was responsible for the tipped shot, and Rockford would not surrender their fourth lead of the hockey game.
Aittokallio stopped 28 of 32 and is now 8-7-1 on the season. Simpson is 7-11-0 after stopping 21 of 24 Monsters shots in the Rockford win.
The Monsters and IceHogs play again in Rockford Saturday evening at 8:00 PM Eastern. The game airs live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
