Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, R.I. - The Providence Bruins defeated the Syracuse Crunch 1-0 in a shootout Friday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Niklas Svedberg made 24 saves in his second shutout of the season. Alexander Khokhlachev, Jared Knight and Seth Griffith scored in the shootout.

Goaltending dominated the opening period as Svedberg made a flurry of saves midway through the period and made a sliding save to keep the game scoreless. A combination of defense and a series of saves from goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis kept the P-Bruins off the scoreboard. The game went into the first intermission scoreless.

The defensive flow of the first period kept up in the middle frame. The P-Bruins defensive strategy in the period led to less quality shots for the Crunch allowing Svedberg to be in good position to keep the game scoreless. The Crunch had a chance to get on the scoreboard when they had the only power play opportunity in the period just after the midway point but they were shut down by the P-Bruins penalty kill as the game remained scoreless after two.

The third period provided more energy than the previous two periods. Alexander Khokhlachev had the first good chance on a breakaway that was poked away by Gudlevskis. The second big save for the Crunch came on a back door pass from Nick Johnson to Craig Cunningham. Svedberg made his biggest save of the game late in the period using his blocker to punch the puck away from the scrum in front of the net. Johnson fired the puck just wide of the net with time running out, sending the game into overtime.

After a scoreless overtime the game went to a shootout. Both teams scored on their first shots. Evan Rankin started the action by beating Svedberg glove side. Khokhlachev tied it up with a fake shot and then slipped the puck five-hole on Gudlevskis. The second round mirrored the first with Brett Connolly beating Svedberg glove side and then Jared Knight beating Gudlevskis five-hole. After neither team scored in the third round, Seth Griffith faked a shot five-hole and backhanded the game-winning goal over Gudlevskis' blocker in round four as Providence went onto win 1-0.

Svedberg stopped all 23 shots in regulation and three shots in the shootout for the P-Bruins, while Gudlevskis finished with 22 saves in regulation and one save in the shootout for the Crunch. Providence went 0-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

The P-Bruins travel to Syracuse Saturday to take on the Crunch at 7:00pm before returning home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday, January 12 at 3:05pm against the Manchester Monarchs. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a chip clip courtesy of Uncle Bob's Self Storage. For tickets to this game or any other P-Bruins home games visit www.providencebruins.com .
