Albany Devils News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA - Scott Wedgewood made 21 saves for his first career shutout, helping the second-place Albany Devils defeat the first-place Springfield Falcons, 3-0, Friday at MassMutual Center. Rod Pelley, Joe Whitney and Artem Demkov provided the offense as Albany improved to 20-10-3-2. Springfield moved to 25-6-1-3.
In his 19th career AHL appearance, Wedgewood made six saves in the first, six in the second and nine in the third. The shutout was Albany's fifth of the season and improved the Devils netminder to 7-6-1.
Pelley opened the scoring at 9:30 of the first period. Brandon Burlon found Adam Larsson, who was loaned from New Jersey Thursday, at the right point. The Devils defenseman unloaded a shot and Pelley was atop the crease to put back the rebound for his sixth goal of the season.
Then near the end of the second period, Scott Timmins sprung Whitney for his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Whitney deked and found an opening between Falcons netminder Jeremy Smith's legs at 18:52.
Moments later, Wedgewood was tested when a defensive-end turnover forced him to make a pair of point blank saves to keep Albany's lead heading into the intermission.
After the break, Demkov added to the Devils advantage at 6:14. Pelley's shot pin balled in front and Demkov took a few whacks before elevating the puck for his fourth tally of the season. Seth Helgeson was credited with the second helper.
Albany owned a 26-21 shot advantage against its Northeast Division rival.
Next up, the Devils welcome the Manchester Monarchs to the Times Union Center for a 5 pm outing Saturday. The game is part of "GE Kids In Free Day" with free admission for all children 12-and-under.
