Marlies Edge IceCaps 3-2

ST. JOHN'S, NL - While a two-goal third period drew the St. John's IceCaps to within a goal of tying things up, the Toronto Marlies held on to edge the IceCaps 3-2 Friday night at Mile One Centre.

Sam Carrick scored the game-winner, while Petter Granberg and Peter Holland potted the other tallies for the Marlies. Drew MacIntyre turned aside 27 shots to earn the victory.

Kael Mouillierat and Andrew Gordon - leading the third-period comeback for St. John's - scored for the IceCaps. Eddie Pasquale stopped 34-of-37 in a losing effort.

The Marlies jumped out to an early lead just over a minute into the opening period, when Granberg notched his second of the season. Granberg's point shot off the faceoff hit a leg in front and found the back of the net to make it 1-0.

While on the man advantage, Holland put Toronto ahead 2-0 at 3:02. Weighing his options at the bottom of the circle, Spencer Abbott got Pasquale to go down on a faked shot before sending a cross-ice feed to Holland, who tapped it into the wide-open net.

After the IceCaps kept the Marlies off the scoreboard for most of the second frame, Carrick tipped a Josh Leivo shot up and over the pad of Pasquale at 18:43 to send Toronto to the dressing room with a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Mouillierat got the IceCaps on the board just over five minutes into the third, however, with the IceCaps on the power play. Taking a beautiful cross-ice feed from JC Lipon, Mouillierat one-timed it five-hole past MacIntyre to make it 3-1.

Then, at 13:26, Gordon cut the deficit to one as the IceCaps were buzzing in the Marlies' zone. After MacIntyre made the initial stop on Brenden Kichton, Gordon swarmed the front of the net and scooped up the loose disc before firing it upstairs to make it 3-2. That stood to be the final score, as the IceCaps' fell just short of completing the comeback.

The IceCaps look to draw even against the Marlies tomorrow night (7:30 PM NT), when they close out their two-game series at Mile One Centre.
