Portland Pirates News Release
Lewiston, ME - The Norfolk Admirals came back from a 3 goal deficit and a 4-3 Friday to beat the Pirates in a shootout, winning 5-4. Max Friberg had two goals and an assist and Igor Bobkov made 27 saves to earn the win for Norfolk.
The Pirates came out in the first with the wind to their backs, jumping right on top of the Admirals barely a minute into the contest. After getting the puck into the zone, Lucas Lessio made a nice play at the blue line to keep the puck in before dancing around a defender and feeding a perfect saucer pass to Andy Miele, who easily beat Bobkov.
Chris Summers extended the lead at 11:41 when he blasted a slap shot from the point. Receiving a pass from Miele, Summers wound up and let loose a cannon that beat Bobkov low to the glove side. With the assist, Miele moved into a tie with Chris Jensen for 14th all-time in points in Pirates history with 138. Miele sits one point behind Norm Batherson, who is in 13th with 139.
The Pirates took a commanding 3-0 lead early on in the second when Ethan Werek beat Bobkov with a bad-angle shot. Streaking down the left wing boards, Werek fired his shot as he hit the bottom of the circle, finding daylight and notching his second goal of the season.
Devante Smith-Pelly got the Admirals on the board first at 6:25 in the second. Visentin made the save on the initial Smith-Pelly shot, but the rebound bounced off his defender and right into the Portland net. Then, with just 16 seconds remaining in the second period, Friberg cut the Pirate lead to one when he scored on the power play.
The power play proved successful again for Norfolk in the third when Emerson Etem blasted home a one-timer. The Admirals went tic-tac-toe, ending with Etem burying his shot off the feed from Friberg.
With the game knotted at three, the Pirates took the lead back when Tobias Rieder punched in a rebound with just 2:46 remaining in the game. The play started in the defensive zone for Portland when Brett Hextall stripped an Admirals player of the puck. Hextall quickly skated up-ice, powering his way towards the net and flinging the puck at Bobkov. The puck squirted loose and Rieder pounced, slamming it home and giving the Pirates the late lead. But the Admirals rallied again, scoring their third power play goal of the game when Friberg was able to beat Visentin from the left circle.
In the shootout, Rickard Rakell and Jesse Blacker were able to score while Bobkov stopped all four Pirates shooters.
The Pirates travel to Bridgeport to face the Sound Tigers tomorrow night. Puck drop is at 7 PM and the game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
