Baton Rouge Kingfish News Release


Jump on top: Five games, five one-goal deficits to open each game. The Kingfish have given up the first goal of the game in each of their first five contest of the season. Baton Rouge fell behind 3-0 to Jackson on opening night. Mississippi jumped out to a 3-0 lead as well in the Kingfish's second contest. Pensacola took a 2-0 lead before the ‘Fish got on the board in game 3. Jackson jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Friday night and Louisiana took the same early lead on the ‘Fish on Sunday.

At the end of one: For the first time this season, the Kingfish took a lead to the locker room after one period of play. The Kingfish led the Louisiana Ice Gators 2-1 after a period on Saturday before falling to the Ice Gators 5-3. The Kingfish were not trailing at the end of the first period for the first time this season as they were knotted at 1-1 against the Bandits on Friday.

Get rid of the rubber: The Kingfish have been throwing a lot of rubber at the net this season. The Kingfish have outshot their opponents by a combined 174 to 147. Baton Rouge has average 35 shots per game while their opponents have average just over 29 shots per game.

Special Teams: Baton Rouge has taken advantage of its special teams opportunities in this young season. The Kingfish have picked up 10 goals on 49 power play opportunities. Despite giving up 9 goals on 35 opponent power plays, the Kingfish have added three shorthanded tallies in just five games. The Kingfish are just 2 shorthanded goal shy of last year's total of 5.

Gettin' in on the Action: Just five games into the season, just about everybody on the Kingfish roster has gotten in on the action. Seventeen of 20 players, including goaltender Paxton Schafer, have tallied at least one point in one of the Kingfish's first five games.

May I help you with something? Kingfish forward Wes Scanzano has been offering his teammates a helping hand lately. He has tallied at least one assist in each of the Kingfish's last three games, the longest current assist steak by a Kingfish.

In the Lead: Clark Jones, Trevor Demmans and Glenn Crawford all lead the Kingfish in scoring with 6 points apiece. Jones and Demmans each have 2 goals and 4 assists while Crawford has 3 goals and 3 assists.

October 18, 2002 – Baton Rouge 4, @ Jackson 2

Despite giving up the first goal of the contest, the Kingfish battled back to tie the game at 1-1 before the end of the opening period on a power play goal by Bryan Richardson. The Kingfish took a 2-1 lead as Sam Paquet beat a frozen Tyrone Garner over the shoulder. The lead didn't hold up long as the Bandits answered to tie the game at 2-2, but just 25 seconds later, Wes Scanzano regained the one goal lead for the Kingfish. Glenn Crawford added an empty net goal to ice the contest for Baton Rouge.

October 19, 2002 - @ Louisiana 5, Baton Rouge 3

The Kingfish took a 2-1 lead to the locker room after one period despite giving up the first goal of the contest. It took Louisiana the entire second period to tie the contest up at 2-2. The Ice Gators took the 3-2 lead early in the third period. The Kingfish answered two minutes later as Bryan Richardson tied the contest at 3-3 with a shorthanded goal. The Ice Gators took the lead at the midway mark of the period and added an empty net goal with under a minute to play to put the game away.

October 25, 2002 – vs. Mississippi Sea Wolves @ 7:05 p.m. (104.5 WZRB)

The Kingfish face the Sea Wolves for the second time this season at the ‘Fish Tank'. Mississippi won the first meeting 3-2, back on October 12. The Kingfish spotted the Sea Wolves three goals in the first two periods before the ‘Fish added two power play goals in the final stanza. The Kingfish outshot the Sea Wolves 33-25 in the first meeting.

October 26, 2002 – vs. Louisiana Ice Gators @ 7:05 p.m. (sportsjuice.com)

Ice Gators first visit to the ‘Fish Tank' this season. Louisiana won the first meeting 5-3 at the Cajun Dome. Kingfish were outshot in the contest 34-29 and only picked up 5 shots on net in the second stanza. The Kingfish are 23-34-4 all time against the Ice Gators.

October 27, 2002 - @ Mississippi Sea Wolves @ 5:05 p.m. (104.5 WZRB)

Baton Rouge's second meeting in three days against Mississippi. Kingfish face the Sea Wolves 12 times this season. Just 8 games into the season, the Kingfish will have played ¼ of their games against the Sea Wolves this year.

Trick or Treat with Fish: The Kingfish will be in full costume for Halloween night when the Louisiana Ice Gators are in town on October 26, 2002. In all black, the Kingfish will be wearing special Halloween jerseys festooned with ghosts and goblins. Along with free balloon art for the kids, fans can "Trick or Treat with the Fish", following the game. Kingfish players will be handing out free candy in a safe and fun atmosphere.
