K-Wings extend unbeaten streak
December 7, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Greenville, SC- Jordan Binnington made 36 saves to record his first professional shutout as the Kalamazoo Wings raised their unbeaten streak (4-0-0-1) to five games with a 2-0 victory over the Greenville Road Warriors.
Despite applying plenty of pressure, the K-Wings skated to a scoreless opening period. Kalamazoo outshot Greenville 14-5 in the stanza.
The goaltending duel continued through the second period, as the score remained scoreless.
Binnington was busier in the middle frame stopping 17 shots, while Greenville's Scott Stajcer turned away nine shots.
Kalamazoo ended the gridlock midway in the third period when Stajcer, who was out of net playing the puck, sent a pass off of Matt Caria. Caria (2nd) found the loose puck and sent it into the empty net.
Adding insurance late in regulation, Yanni Gourde (10th) put in his own rebound with 35 seconds remaining to secure the victory. Gourde's tally extended his goal streak to a K-Wings season-high four games and his point streak to a K-Wings season-high five games.
Saturday night wasn't the first time that Binnington has met Stajcer. The two were teammates for three seasons (2009-2012) in the Ontario Hockey League with the Owen Sound Attack.
Kalamazoo will conclude their four-game road swing on Tuesday, December 10th with a 7:35 p.m. encounter against the Cincinnati Cyclones.
The K-Wings will return home on Friday, December 13th versus the Cyclones on Ugly Holiday Sweater Contest and Teddy Bear Toss Night. The fan that wears the ugliest Holiday sweater will receive $200. The game will also feature $2 beers, $2 hot dogs and $1 Pepsi products.
December 13th will also be the annual Teddy Bear Toss night, when the K-Wings score their first goal; fans will throw stuffed animals onto the ice. The stuffed animals collected will go to the Salvation Army and to the K-Wings annual visit to the Children's Hospital at Bronson.
