Iowa Wins Series Opener

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (53-36) extended their winning streak against the Indianapolis Indians (42-48) to six games, as they won the series opener by a score of 7-3, Tuesday at Principal Park.

Edwin Ríos got Iowa on the board with a solo home run in the second inning. Later that inning, Yonathan Perlaza brought in two with his 23rd double of the season, giving the I-Cubs a 3-0 lead.

Indianapolis got a run back in the third with a solo home run from Vinny Capra, cutting their deficit to 3-1. The game stayed there until the fourth, when Perlaza struck again.

The switch hitter clubbed his 11th home run of the year, a two-run shot to extend Iowa's lead to 5-1. Both teams scored in the fifth, as the Indians got two runs on a double from Capra and a sacrifice fly from Rodolfo Castro.

Luis Vazquez used an RBI double to bring Iowa's lead back to three, at 6-3. Nick Neidert kept the score there, as he spun three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out four.

Iowa scored a seventh run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Bryce Windham, and Brendon Little spun a scoreless ninth inning, securing the 7-3 victory.

POSTGAME NOTES:

In his third career Triple-A start, Jordan Wicks tossed 4.0 innings of three-run ball. The southpaw allowed five hits including one home run while striking out four.

Yonathan Perlaza drove in four of Iowa's seven runs, going 2-for-5 with a run scored, a double and a home run.

Luis Vazquez went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two doubles and a run batted in. The shortstop is now hitting .333 in his 15 games with Iowa.
