Ildemaro Vargas Becomes Aces New Hit King
May 14, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release
Reno, NV. - The Reno Aces have been in Northern Nevada since 2009. Thousands of players have donned the Aces uniform, but none have recorded as many hits as Aces infielder Ildemaro Vargas. It took three at-bats this afternoon for Vargas to tally two hits. His first came in games second at-bat with a solo home run over the right-center field wall. The second of the day and 400th of his Aces career came in the bottom of the fifth inning with a hard-hit single. The 27-year-old Venezuela native made his Reno debut in 2016, appearing in 49 games while hitting .354. He's been a Triple-A All-Star in back-to-back seasons (2017 & 2018), and a fan-favorite since day one. After a brief stint with Arizona to start the 2019 campaign, Vargas is 11-for-15 through four games with the Aces.
Reno dropped the series finale 11-9, setting a new season-high with seven consecutive losses. Matt Koch was tagged with the loss (4.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K), his first of the season. The Aces jumped out to an early 2-0 lead courtesy of home runs by Vargas and Kevin Cron. Salt Lake responded with five of their own against right-hander Taylor Clarke and added two more by the fifth. A four-run Reno outburst was greeted with a four-run Salt Lake seventh. The loss drops Reno to a record of 14-25 heading into the much-needed day off.

Notes & Information
That's a First: Aces Manager Chris Cron and outfielder Travis Snider were ejected from today's contest in the bottom of the first inning. The ejections were the first for Reno in 2019 and the first for both Snider and Cron in their Aces careers. The Aces had eight total ejections in 2018, the last coming on August 23, 2018, with Greg Gross and Kevin Cron for arguing a call at first base.
Hit King: Ildemaro Vargas is the newest hit king for the Reno Aces. With two hits tonight, Vargas set the Aces franchise-record with 400. He recorded 70 hits in 2016, 152 in 2017, 167 in 2018 and 11 this season. Cole Gillespie was the previous franchise leader (399).
