IceGators drop two in Florida as a month on the road comes to an end

Lafayette, LA – The IceGators suffered back to back road losses last weekend to the Florida Everblades. In both games the Gators squandered two goal leads, on Saturday the Gators lost via three 3rd period power play goals by the home team. Louisiana finished the month of January with a record of 2-10, nine of the losses coming on the road.

Last Week

Friday, The Florida Everblades scored two 3rd period goals to cap a come from behind effort and defeat the Louisiana IceGators 5-3 The Gators set a new team record when Wes Mason scored just 10 seconds into the game. The old record for fastest goal to start a game was :12 set by Konstantin Kalmikov in 2001. Mark Rooneem and Shawn Skiehar lit the lamp for the Gators in the losing effort.

Saturday, The Florida Everblades scored three power play goals in the 3rd period to cap a late comeback and defeat the Louisiana IceGators 6-5. David Bararuk and Roger Leonard had two goals each and Mark Rooneem scored for the 2nd consecutive night. However a boarding major penalty on Doug MacIver changed momentum in the 3rd period and the Blades scored 3 times on the power play to get the 6-5 win.

The Nominees are: The IceGators nominees for ECHL of the weekly awards are Jade Galbraith and Goaltender Kyle Kettles.

The Week Ahead

The IceGators next home game is Wednesday, February 2 when the Pensacola Ice Pilots visit the "Frozen Swamp" This game will be a "Cheap Date Wednesday" when fans can buy one ticket and get a second one free. This will also be a "Ladies Night" complete with Margarita specials and a post game "Date-A-Gator" player auction at Pilots Pub. Proceeds from the auction to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. In addition, A Bryan Jewelers is sponsoring a "Diamond Giveaway" as the first 500 ladies 18 and older through the door will receive a Cubic Zirconium. One of the jewels is specially marked and if you take it to A Bryan Jewelers before February 11, 2005 it will be exchanged for a diamond valued at $3,000.

Friday night, the Gators head west on I-10 to Beaumont for a battle with the Texas Wildcatters. Louisiana is 4-2 against Texas this year with two of the wins coming by a shutout. Kyle Kettles last win was against the Wildcatters, a 1-0 whitewashing on November 27.

Notes

"The Hinton Connection": Since coming to Louisiana, Jade Galbraith has averaged more than a point a game with 15 points, (4-11-15) in eleven games as a Gator. Mark Rooneem has benefited from the acquisition of his hometown buddy, the rookie forward has 8 goals in 11 games since Galbraith's arrival. In fact, Galbraith has an assist on the last 6 goals by Rooneem.

"Go to the box and feel shame": Defenseman Doug MacIver has taken over the ECHL lead in penalty minutes. After getting nailed for 25 minutes Saturday night against Florida, MacIver now has 208 PIMs for the season. MacIver is tied for league lead with 39 minor penalties.

Community News

"Gator Talk" returns to Tampicos this Tuesday night at 7pm. Joining Coach Todd Gordon and Bruce LeVine will be rugged forward Shawn Skiehar and Swedish import Center Patrik Nilson.

The IceGators will practice through Thursday at the Cajundome starting at 10am. For pregame skate on Friday, the team will lace up the skates at the Hockeyplex in Carencro.

Project MAMA

For the entire season the Gators are encouraging fans to participate in the Project MAMA. A list of supplies needed by our local troops serving overseas is listed at http://www.icegators.com/news/?cat=1&id=627 and in the lobby of the Cajundome for during every IceGators home game.. The team will have drop off points at the Cajundome for every home game and the effort will culminate our next Armed Forces Nights on March 20, 2005. On this night, children of our deployed troops will have a special day of IceGators hockey complete with a tour of the locker room and a picture with their favorite player. That picture along with supplies will be sent to loved ones overseas.
