April 7, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Louisiana IceGators News Release
Lafayette, LA- In what may be the last game in the storied rivalry between the Louisiana IceGators and Mississippi Sea Wolves, Chris Thompson saved the Gators on their last chance in a shoot out and Patrik Nilson got the game winner in a dramatic.3-2 victory over Mississippi.
The Sea Wolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period as Lucas Drake and Mike Jarmuth lit the lamp. At 11:10, Milt Mastad took a shot from the right point that hit the back glass and bounced to Drake at the near post. Drake was able to tap the puck into the virtually empty net for his 8th of the season. Lance Mayes had come out of the crease to cut down the angle on the Mastad shot and could not scramble back. At 17:23, Mike Jarmuth scored his 13th when he came in from the point and from the right side, squeezed the puck through the five hole of Mayes for a two goal advantage.
The Gators outplayed the Sea Wolves in the 2nd period and were able to tie the game at 2-2. At 3:00, Wes Mason stole the puck in the left corner and made a perfect centering pass the Jim Shepherd. The veteran one-timed it from the slot past Randy Petruk for his 13th of the year and a 2-1 deficit. Gators forechecking led to the tying goal when Alex Sawruk stole the puck behind the Wolves net and fed Jade Galbraith in slot for his 19th of the season. Louisiana outshot Mississippi 18-4 in the 2nd period.
After a scoreless third period and overtime, the game was settled in a shootout. Louis Dumont scored in round two for the Sea Wolves and it looked like that would be the game winner. Round five Chris Thompson was the Gators last hope and he kept the team alive with a brilliant backhand move to send the shoot out to round six. After Mayes stoned Bates Battaglia, Patrik Nilson went backhand beating Petruk to the glove side, giving Louisiana a 3-2 shoot out victory. In the nine year rivalry between the two clubs, Louisiana has a record of 41-30-8.
With the win, Louisiana's record is now 25-39-6, 56 points and 5th place in the South. The Gators outshot Mississippi 39-38. Power plays were 0-7 for the Gators and 0-6 for the Wolves.
The Gators next game is tomorrow night, April 8, when the Gators visit the Texas Wildcatters at 7:05pm. ALL games the remainder of the season can be heard on 960am "The Gator".
