IceGators Upset Sea Wolves 3-2 In Shootout
April 7, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
LAFAYETTE, La. â Louisiana's Chris Thompson scored in the fifth round of the shootout and Patrik Nilson tallied in the sixth round to give the IceGators a dramatic 3-2 shootout win over the Mississippi Sea Wolves at the Cajundome.
"Give Louisiana credit, they battled hard," Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. "The good news is that we got one point, but we have made it hard on ourselves. Finishing up the regular season with a home-and-home series against Pensacola, it's going to be very interesting."
Mississippi (39-23-8, 86 points) got its offense in gear at the 11:10 mark. The puck ricocheted off the end boards to the side of the Louisiana net, where Lucas Drake beat goaltender Lance Mayes to deposit his eighth goal of the campaign. Milt Mastad and John Evangelista collected helpers.
Rookie defenseman Mike Jarmuth, who was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team earlier in the day, gave the Sea Wolves a 2-0 lead at 17:23 of the first. Jarmuth unleashed a shot from the low right circle to set a new Mississippi team record for goals by a rookie defenseman by notching his 13th goal to surpass Quinn Fair in the 1996-97 season. Assists went to Bates Battaglia and Louis Dumont.
Louisiana (25-39-6, 56 points) bounced back in the second period. Three minutes into the stanza, Jim Shepherd netted his 13th goal of the year beating goaltender Randy Petruk set up Wes Mason and Joe Dustin.
The IceGators tied the score 2-2 on a turnover in the Mississippi zone. Alex Sawruk stole the puck behind the Sea Wolves net and centered for Jade Galbraith, who buried his 19th goal of the year. David Turon was also awarded an assist.
The game remained deadlocked into the shootout. Dumont scored for Mississippi while Thompson and Nilson registered goals to give Louisiana the victory.
Mississippi was unsuccessful on five power play chances, while Louisiana failed to convert on six opportunities with the man advantage. IceGators outshot the Sea Wolves 39-38.
