SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Idaho Steelheads extended its unbeaten streak to 18 games tonight with a 3-2 shootout win over the Gulls in San Diego. The points guarantee Idaho at least a third place finish in the National Conference, West Division.

Idaho had the first power play early in the first period, but couldn't convert. Instead the Gulls scored first. Wes Rypien tallied after he came down right wing side and pushed ahead to the net, beating goaltender Matt Yeats at 14:10.

At 10:04 of the second period, Mike Stutzel scored an unassisted goal to tie the game. The tally was Stutzel's 6th in 12 games with the Steelheads. With 5:01 remaining and the Steelheads on the power play, Guillaume Fournier slid the puck across to rookie Chester Ferreira who scored a shorthanded goal to gain back the lead for the Gulls.

In the third, Idaho had a 5-on-3 and scored with two-seconds left in the two-man advantage. Warren Peters knotted the game at 7:51 as he waited on the doorstep and banged home a pass from Stutzel. The tie held through the remainder of regulation play, sending the game to a 4-on-4 sudden death five-minute extra period.

Both teams had good scoring chances late in the overtime period, but both goalies came up with big saves forcing a shootout.

Three Idaho shooters scored: Stutzel, Peters and Andrei Vasilyev, while Yeats kept the Gulls off the board, stoning all three shooters for the win.
