Idaho Burns Gulls In Shootout, 3-2
April 7, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO â The San Diego Gulls carried a 2-1 lead into the third period, but the Idaho Steelheads tied it in regulation, then won it in a shootout, picking up a 3-2 victory Wednesday night at the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena.
Warren Peters tied the game eight minutes into the third stanza, while he and two others beat San Diego netminder Eddy Ferhi in the shootout. Meanwhile, Idaho goaltender Matt Yeats turned aside all three Gulls shooters in the extra frame.
The Steelheads (42-21-7), who swept the Gulls last week in Boise, have now clinched at least third place in the West Division. They, however, are only one point behind the second-place Long Beach Ice Dogs with two games left to play in the regular season. Idaho is also unbeaten in its last 18 games (14-0-4) and 25 of its last 26 games overall (21-1-4).
San Diego (34-29-7) is now winless in its last four games and five of its last six. The Gulls will finish the season with two more home games this weekend against the last-place Victoria Salmon Kings.
Wes Rypien gave the Gulls a 1-0 lead with his first professional goal 14:10 into the opening frame. Former Steelhead Brett Draney had the puck at his own blue line and threaded a pass to a streaking Rypien, who got by an Idaho defender and beat Yeats low to the ice.
The Steelheads tied it at the 10:04 mark of the second, as Mike Stutzel punched in his sixth goal of the year. Newcomer and rookie defenseman Chester Ferreira tried to backhand the puck out of the San Diego zone, but Stutzel picked it off and skated uncontested into the slot before firing a shot past Ferhi.
Ferreira, fresh out of college and playing in his first pro game, certainly got his revenge minutes later with a short-handed tally that regained the Gulls' one-goal lead. After stealing the puck in his own zone, he rushed down the ice on a two-on-one with Guillaume Fournier. The two played catch with the puck before Ferreira finally chipped a shot over a sliding Yeats at 14:49.
Idaho was awarded a long two-man advantage in the third period and cashed in at the 7:51 mark, making it a 2-2 game. Peters got the goal, his 22nd of the season, tapping in Darrell Hay's cross-ice pass from the left point. It was Peters' fifth marker against the Gulls this season.
That's how things stayed through regulation and the five-minute overtime period, so the game headed to a shootout. In the extra frame, Stutzel, Peters and Andrei Vasilyev scored for Idaho. Yeats stopped Fournier, Max Birbraer and Chris Lynch.
