Pensacola Ice Pilots Receive Brabham Cup On Saturday

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Brabham Cup trophy will be presented to the Pensacola Ice Pilots during an on-ice ceremony prior to the final regular season home game on Saturday against Mississippi. The ceremony will feature Chad Quenneville and Shane Calder, who were inducted as charter members of the Ice Pilots Hall of Fame on February 26. Quenneville was team captain and appeared in every regular season and postseason games for the Ice Pilots during their first three seasons while Calder played the first four seasons for Pensacola.
Presented to the regular season point champion in the ECHL each season, the Brabham Cup will be displayed throughout the game and fans will have the opportunity to have their pictures taken with the trophy. The Brabham Cup is named in recognition of Henry Brabham, who was a founding member of the ECHL and the first owner of the Erie Panthers. A former mayor and businessman who was a major force in professional hockey in Virginia for more than 15 years, Brabham worked tirelessly to establish the ECHL during its early years.
Pensacola is 49-16-5 with 103 points and has clinched the ECHL regular season point title and secured home ice throughout the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Becoming the 15th team in league history to reach 100 points, Pensacola needs a win in its last two games to become the sixth team in 17 years to win 50 games. The Ice Pilots have set team records for points (103), wins (49), home wins (25), road wins (24), consecutive wins (12) and consecutive home wins (9) while tying the team record for consecutive road wins (6).
The Ice Pilots will be selling 1,000 commemorative T-shirts featuring the Brabham Cup on the front and the names of the players on the championship team on the back that will only be available during Saturday's game. Following the game, fans will be able to meet the players during an autograph session and also will have the opportunity to purchase home and away game-worn jerseys during an auction.
Pensacola has home ice for the 2005 Kelly Cup Playoffs which open on April 12. The Ice Pilots have qualified for the postseason each of the last four seasons and six of the eight years since the team moved to Pensacola prior to 1996-97. Pensacola advanced to the Kelly Cup Finals in 1998, losing in six games to Hampton Roads.
