Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers (21-16) dropped the second game of a four-game set against the Omaha Storm Chasers (21-15) by a score of 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium.
Rainiers starting pitcher Brad Mills, making his first start of the year, allowed two runs on four hits over 5.0 innings of work. The lefty issued four walks and struck out five Omaha batters.
Third baseman Ed Lucas (2x4) led the Tacoma offense with a pair of hits, while left fielder Dario Pizzano (1x4) extended his season-long hitting streak to nine games with an RBI single in the second inning.
The first three Omaha batters to the plate in the top of the first reached base, leading to an RBI groundout from Brett Eibner that gave the Storm Chasers an early 1-0 lead.
Pizzano extended his hitting streak to nine games and tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second - his base knock scored right fielder Mike Baxter from second, who reached base on a fielding error to open the frame.
Storm Chasers first baseman Jose Martinez broke apart the tie with a two-out, solo home run in the top of the third inning - the shot to left-center field gave Omaha the lead back at 2-1.
Center fielder Daniel Robertson set down bunt single in the bottom of the seventh to load the bases for Tacoma with no outs. Two batters later, second baseman Chris Taylor pushed across the tying run with a fielders choice groundout, scoring Lucas and knotting the game back up at 2-2.
Omaha right fielder Whit Merrifield responded with a solo home run of his own with one out in the top of the eighth, snagging a 3-2 lead for the Storm Chasers.
The Storm Chasers made one final push with a solo home run from third baseman Hunter Dozier in the top of the ninth to give Omaha the 4-2 victory.
In his first appearance out of the bullpen this year, Cody Martin worked 3.0 one-run innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out three - he was handed his third loss of the season.
Left-hander James Paxton (4-2, 2.81) takes the mound for the Rainiers as they continue their series with the Storm Chasers tomorrow, Monday, May 16. Omaha is scheduled to start left-hander John Lannan (3-2, 5.54). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. PT.
