Reno Aces News Release
RENO - Less than 20 hours after being handed a lopsided 17-2 loss, the Reno Aces made Saturday's night slaughtering an afterthought with a convincing win of their own over the Iowa Cubs, 9-3, Sunday afternoon at Greater Nevada Field. The Aces jumped on the Cubs for four runs in the first and another three in the second en route to victory.
The I-Cubs (18-17) picked up where they left off Saturday, plating single runs in the first and second inning against Archie Bradley (@ArchieBradley7). Reno responded in a big way in both frames, however, erasing little doubt that Sunday's affair would match game one of the series.
Reno (16-20) sent eight batters to the plate in the opening frame against former Aces starter Alex Sanabia. Jason Bourgeois (@jbourgeois11) began the home half with a single and quickly swiped second. Mike Freeman (@mikebfree5) then walked, setting up a Sócrates Brito (@SocratesBrito) hustle double which tied the game at one. The next batter, Jack Reinheimer (@Reinheimer_08), joined the hit parade with a two-run single to left, and Tuffy Gosewisch followed suit, lining the eighth pitch of his at-bat to center, pushing Reno's lead to 4-1.
The Cubs pulled back within two in the top of the second, but Peter O'Brien - who struck out swinging in the first - got the better of Sanabia his second time up. With Bourgeois and Freeman again on the bases, O'Brien smashed a 3-1 offering over the batter's eye in deep center, giving the Aces a 7-2 advantage.
The Aces padded their lead in the third on a run-scoring single by Sean Jamieson (@SeanJay04). In the fourth, Brito lined a solo homer - his third - into Reno's right-field bullpen.
Iowa scratched its final run across in the ninth on a single by Logan Watkins.
Bradley (4-1) settled in after giving up two runs over the first two innings by retiring 11 of the last 12 he faced. He delivered his fifth quality start in six outings for the Aces, scattering five hits with one walk and four strikeouts over seven innings. Sanabia (0-1) took the loss in his I-Cubs debut after yielding seven earned runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Bourgeois, Brito, Gosewisch and Reinheimer all collected two hits apiece. Freeman also walked four times, matching a feat previously completed five times in team history, most recently by Mike Jacobs on September 10, 2014 against Omaha in the Pacific Coast League Championship Series.
Reno continues its eight-game, nine-day homestand Monday night with Game 3 of a four-game series against the Iowa Cubs. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. PT. Reno will send right-hander Braden Shipley (3-2, 3.27) to the mound, opposite of righty Drew Rucinski (2-3, 6.45).
