Reno Aces News Release

RENO - Donning D-backs purple throwback uniforms to Arizona's 2001 World Series Championship season, the Reno Aces were bruised and battered by the Iowa Cubs from the get-go in a 17-2 loss Saturday night at Greater Nevada Field. A six-run second inning gave the visitors an early eight-run advantage, and the Aces were unable to dig themselves out.

Iowa (18-16) smashed three hits off Aces starter Matt Buschmann (@Busch26) in the top half of the first, highlighted by a run-scoring triple from Cubs top-prospect Willson Contreras. Juan Perez plated Contreras later in the inning to make it 2-0.

Things worsened considerably for Buschmann in the ensuing frame.

The Cubs sent nine batters to the plate and as a team, hit for the cycle in the inning as part of six hits. Munenori Kawasaki began the onslaught with a single to right and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cubs starter Jake Buchanan. John Andreoli then bunted his way aboard, a play where Buschmann sailed the throw past first, allowing Kawasaki to trot home. Albert Almora followed with an RBI triple, pushing Iowa's lead to four. After a fielder's choice, Dan Vogelbach continued the rally with a double, preceding a run-scoring single by Juan Perez. Moments later, Arismendy Alcantara provided another blow with a three-run drive into the Aces' right-field bullpen.

Down 8-0, the Aces (15-20) chipped away with single runs in the second and third. Carlos Rivero (@Carlos_Rivero3) bounced an RBI single into center to get the Aces on the board after Iowa's six-run outburst, and an RBI double by Mike Freeman (@mikebfree5) scored Buschmann who tripled to open the third.

Iowa added to Reno's misery with a run in the sixth and back-to-back four-run frames in the seventh and eighth. The seventh inning featured a run-scoring single by Kawasaki and a two-run single by Contreras. In the eighth, Kristopher Negrón snuck a three-run homer over the right-field wall to make it 16-2, and Andreoli tacked on another insurance run with a single for good measure.

Buschmann (0-4) suffered the loss after yielding eight earned runs on 10 hits over five innings. Buchanan improved to 3-1 after throwing seven innings of two-run ball. He scattered five hits, walked one and struck out five.

Brett Hayes (@bretthayes12) was the lone bright spot for the Aces' bullpen. He recorded five outs and escaped a jam in the ninth after walking the bases loaded. His appearance on the mound was the first by a position player for Reno in 2016.

The 19 hits allowed by Reno's staff matched a season-high set on April 18 at El Paso. The 17 runs surrendered were the most by an opponent since Las Vegas blasted Reno 19-2 on May 1, 2014 at Cashman Field.

Reno continues its eight-game, nine-day homestand Sunday afternoon with Game 2 of a four-game series against the Iowa Cubs. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. PT. Reno will send right-hander Archie Bradley (3-1, 2.45) to the mound, opposite of righty Alex Sanabia (0-0, -.--) who will make his I-Cubs debut.
