Iowa Cubs News Release
RENO, Nevada - Iowa (18-16) tallied a season-high 17 runs to take a dominant 17-2 win over the Reno Aces (15-20), Saturday night at Aces Ballpark. All nine of Iowa's starters recorded at least one hit, including starting pitcher Jake Buchanan. Six of the nine collected multiple hits and five knocked in multiple RBI.
Albert Almora Jr. wasted no time extending his hit streak to 10 games with a one-out single in the first inning. Willson Contreras followed with a RBI triple to give Iowa an early 1-0 lead. Juan Perez then skied a sacrifice fly to right field to plate the I-Cubs' second run of the inning. Iowa built on its lead in the next frame with six runs as the team batted through the order. The inning was capitalized by a three-run homer from Arismendy Alcantara, his fifth of the season.
Reno managed to get a run back in each of the second and the third innings with a RBI single from Carlos Rivero and a RBI double from Mike Freeman, but that would be all for the Aces' offense.
Iowa was kept off the board again until the sixth when Daniel Vogelbach grounded into a fielder's choice with bases loaded to bring in the I-Cubs' ninth run of the night. The I-Cubs didn't slow there. They sent another eight batters to the plate in the seventh for four more runs and mirrored the effort with another four runs in the eighth to make it 17-2, I-Cubs.
Alcantara reached base in all six plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with three walks, while also scoring three times, collecting three RBI and stealing his 11th base of the season. Kristopher Negr?"n batted his fourth homer of the season and Iowa's second of the game with a three-run shot in the eighth inning.
Buchanan (3-1) recorded his third consecutive win and fourth consecutive quality start after giving Iowa 7.0 strong innings and allowing just two earned runs off seven hits. C.J. Riefenhauser and Giovanni Soto each tallied a scoreless inning in relief to close out the ballgame. Reno starter Matt Buschmann (0-4) took responsibility for eight earned runs over 5.0 innings to take the loss.
The I-Cubs play the Aces again at 3:05 p.m. MT, Sunday at Aces Ballpark. Listen live on AM 940 or at www.iowacubs.com.
