Round Rock Express News Release
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico - The Albuquerque Isotopes (19-18) knocked off the Round Rock Express (18-17) 8-4 Saturday evening at Isotopes Park in New Mexico. E-Train RHP Nick Martinez (3-2, 4.68) suffered the loss after allowing a season-high seven runs, six of which were earned, on nine hits in six innings of work.
LHP Yohan Flande (2-1, 3.96) picked up the win for Albuquerque after tossing 3.1 scoreless innings of relief. The lefty struck out six while limiting the Express to just two hits.
Round Rock jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after CF Delino DeShields recorded a leadoff double in his first plate appearance of the season with the team since being reassigned from the Texas Rangers. The center fielder scored in the next at-bat thanks to a single from SS Jurickson Profar.
The home team responded nearly immediately. 2B Rafael Ynoa and DH Brandon Barnes notched back-to-back doubles to tie the game at one. A single from CF Mike Tauchman scored Barnes and gave the Isotopes the lead. Following a walk to LF Stephen Cardullo, 1B Jordan Patterson singled to drive home Tauchman. Patterson advanced to second on a fielder's choice then took third on a flyout. The first baseman would come around to score on a throwing error by Martinez to give Albuquerque a 4-1 lead after the first inning of play.
The E-Train tacked on solo runs in the third and fourth innings to narrow the gap. In the third, RF Ryan Strausborger walked, DH Jared Hoying singled, then both runners advanced 90 feet on a perfectly executed double steal. Strausborger scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat.
A two-out rally in the fourth cut the Round Rock deficit to one. Just like in the previous frame, LF James Jones drew a walk before DeShields singled. A throwing error by LHP Jorge De La Rosa allowed Jones to sprint home from second. Strausborger couldn't capitalize with two runners in scoring position, striking out to end the inning.
The Isotopes regained a significant advantage in the sixth thanks to a towering home run from C Ryan Casteel. After singles from Cardullo and Patterson, Casteel stepped up to the plate and drove the first pitch of his at-bat deep into right field to increase the advantage to 7-3. The 'Topes added another run in the eighth. Following a Tauchman single, Express RHP John Fasola plunked Patterson and Castell in back-to-back plate appearances. Tauchman trotted home from third on an ensuing groundout.
Round Rock added an inconsequential run in the eighth as 3B Doug Bernier doubled before C Patrick Cantwell singled him home. RHP Francisco Mendoza pitched a perfect eighth inning, but it was the Isotopes claiming the 8-4 win after the Express were retired in order in the ninth.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow at 2:35 p.m. at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.
