Grizzlies drop second straight game in Nashville
May 15, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
After an early-morning travel day to Nashville on Saturday, then a quick turnaround with a day game on Sunday, the Fresno Grizzlies fell to the Sounds 6-3 at First Tennessee Park, dropping to 2-7 in day games this season. They've fallen in the first two games of this series.
The Grizzlies wasted no time drawing first blood in the top of the first; Nashville-area local Tony Kemp slapped a leadoff single the other way into left field, and moved over on a walk. Jon Singleton then delivered his 21st RBI of the season on a single, tying him with A.J. Reed and Colin Moran for the team lead. Kemp has now hit safely in 12 of 13 games and 18 of his last 21.
For Kemp, this series is a homecoming, hailing from Franklin TN, about 15 minutes outside Nashville. He also stayed home for college, a Vanderbilt University Baseball alum who was named 2013 SEC Player of The Year. Kemp had roughly 50 family and friends in attendance the first two games of the series.
Nashville bounced back with a run in the second and third, on a Rangel Ravelo RBI double and an Andrew Lambo run-scoring since, taking a 2-1 lead. Ravelo has driven in a run in each of the first two games of this series.
Fresno struck back in the fifth, tying the game on Colin Moran's third home run of the year, a solo shot to straight centerfield, well over 400 feet. With the blast, Moran took the team RBI lead away from Reed and Singleton, with his 22nd.
Leading 3-2 in the sixth, Nashville added to their lead with a Bryan Anderson RBI groundout. Leading 4-3 in the seventh, the Sounds received back-to-back two-out RBI hits from Oakland A's prospect Chad Pinder (single) and Matt Olson (double), extending the lead to 6-3. Pinder and Olson have also driven in a run in each game of the series.
Each starter made the decision, going five innings apiece. Brady Rodgers (1-3) allowed six hits and three runs (two earned), with eight strikeouts and three walks. Former Marlin and Blue Jay Henderson Alvarez, on MLB rehab assignment from the A's, allowed six hits and two earned runs, with eight punchouts and a walk.
The series will resume tomorrow at 4:35 p.m. PT / 6:35 CT. Probable starters are RHP Mike Hauschild (3-3, 4.54) for Fresno and RHP Zach Neal (4-1, 2.70) for Nashville.
