Iowa Cubs News Release
RENO, Nevada - After landing on the losing end of a blowout last night, the Reno Aces (16-20) fought back to claim a 9-3 victory over the Iowa Cubs (18-17), Sunday afternoon at Greater Nevada Field. Alex Sanabia (0-1) took the loss in his I-Cubs debut, while Archie Bradley improved to 4-1 after giving the Aces 7.0 strong innings.
Iowa took the first lead in the opening frame as Shane Victorino drew a one-out walk, moved to third on a double from Taylor Davis and came around to score on a ground out from Daniel Vogelbach. The Aces were quick to retaliate, jumping on Iowa in the bottom of the inning with four runs off four hits and a walk.
Kristopher Negrón helped Iowa get a run back in the second with a triple, which was followed by a RBI ground out from Logan Watkins, but Reno's bats wouldn't slow. A one-out, three-run homer from Peter O'Brien in the bottom of the inning put the Aces ahead 7-2 and chased Sanabia after just 1.1 innings pitched. The righty threw 56 pitches and gave up six hits and two walks to make all seven runs earned. Reno tallied another run in each of the next two innings off Jean Machi before Iowa's bullpen was able to shut down the offense. Felix Pena contributed 2.0 scoreless innings, before Brandon Gomes and Spencer Patton each held off the Aces through 1.0 inning of work.
Negrón and Watkins came through for Iowa again in the ninth to give the I-Cubs one last run on the day. Negrón smashed a double off the left-field wall, moved to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a single from Watkins, but Reno pitcher Silvino Bracho sat down the next two batters to put the game in the books.
Albert Almora Jr. stretched his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the fourth, while Vogelbach added a RBI to bring his team-leading total to 29. Davis claimed two of Iowa's eight hits on the day and added a double to his effort.
The I-Cubs and the Aces meet again at 8:35 p.m. CT, Monday at Greater Nevada Field. Listen live on AM 940 or at www.iowacubs.com.
