Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - The Winterhawks (36-17-3-3) found twine in all three periods but fell short in overtime as they dropped a 4-3 OT defeat to the Tri-City Americans (28-24-5-2) on Saturday night.

Adam Mechura notched the game-winner 2:35 into overtime with a one-time blast on the power play after Portland's James Stefan received a five-minute major penalty in the dying minutes of regulation.

The scoring started late in the first period when Lukas Dragicevic put Tri-City on the board at 16:59. Eager to push back, Portland responded before the end of the frame on Marcus Nguyen's 20th of the year to tie things up. With a Hawks power play wrapping up, Marek Alscher walked the puck along the top of the circles before dishing back to Nguyen at the left dot for a delayed wrist shot past Suchanek's glove with nine seconds left in the period.

Both teams tightened up defensively in the second period but still managed to score a goal apiece. Gabe Klassen grabbed the first - his third goal of the weekend - as he poked home a Robbie Fromm-Delorme rebound at the side of the net at 13:40. Tri-City leveled things once again three minutes later as Tyson Greenway nabbed his 25th of the year.

The third period copied the same script as the first two periods, with Kyle Chyzowski finishing off a rush with Nguyen and Luca Cagnoni 4:39 into the frame for Portland, and Jalen Luypen responding in late for Tri-City to tie things up again and force the extra stanza.

Portland is back in action tomorrow night at the VMC against the Everett Silvertips for the Jack in the Box Twilight Game at 6:00 P.M.
