
Oil Kings Blanked by Broncos

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings were shutout on Saturday night at Rogers Place by the visiting Swift Current Broncos.
In the first period, the Broncos got out to an early lead thanks to a power play goal from Connor Hvidston just over four minutes into the game after he had his centering feed tip in off an Edmonton defender in front of their net.
Josh Davies increased the visitor's lead to 2-0 just over four minutes later after he was able to sneak in a shot from the left-circle on a rush into the Edmonton zone.
The Oil Kings had their looks in the first period to get on the board with Cole Miller being denied on a couple of occasions, along with Dawson Seitz and Tom Cadieux being unable to solve Swift Current netminder Joey Rocha on qualities looks in around the Bronco net.
Early in the second period, the Broncos looked like they had a sure goal after Oil King goaltender Kolby Hay came way out of his net and turned the puck over to Josh Filmon, leaving him with a wide-open cage, but a superman head first dive by Hay would thwart the opportunity for the Broncos as the Edmonton netminder was able to get the blade of his stick on the shot.
Later in the period though, Filmon would find the back of the net as he cashed in on a one-timer from the right-circle of the Edmonton zone on a Swift Current power play at the 14:50 mark to give them a 3-0 lead at the second intermission.
In the third period, the Broncos would blow it open getting an early shorthanded goal from Hvidston for his second of the night followed by markers from Caleb Wyrostok, Braeden Lewis, Brady Birnie and Sam Ward, his first career WHL goal, to skate away with an 8-0 win.
Hay finished the night making 42 saves for the Oil Kings, while Rocha turned in 24 stops for his first career WHL shutout. Edmonton went 0-for-2 on the power play, Swift Current was 3-for-4.
Next up, the Oil Kings hit the road for a three-game trip to the East Division starting in Regina on Wednesday night when they battle Connor Bedard and the Pats at 6:00 p.m. MT.
The Edmonton Oil Kings next home game is Friday, March 17 when they take on the Medicine Hat Tigers at 7:00 p.m.
