Glads Remain in First Despite 6-3 Loss to Cyclones

DULUTH, Ga. - With three goals, the Cyclones forward Mathieu Aubin led Cincinnati to a 6-3 win over the Gladiators Friday night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Rookie forward Jacob Drewiske scored his first professional goal for Gwinnett in the loss. Gwinnett remains in first place in the ECHL's Eastern Conference with 85 points.

The Cyclones took a 2-0 lead early in the fist period with two consecutive markers. The first goal came from forward Jonathan Hazen at 5:52. Cincinnati's leading scorer Aubin danced through the Gladiators defense to beat netminder Ryan Zapolski over the shoulder for an unassisted goal at 7:11 to give them their second goal.

Forward Tyler Murovich fired the puck past the Cyclones goaltender Chet Pickard to cut the 2-0 deficit to one at 13:46 into the period. Bryan Brutlag had the assist on the marker.

To end the opening period, Cincinnati forward Anthony Luciani slipped the puck behind Zapolski on the backhand for the 3-1 advantage over the Gladiators. Alain Goulet and David MacDonald each collected a helper on the power play goal.

At 7:29 of the middle stanza, the Cyclones notched another goal on the night to give them a 4-1 lead. Mathew Sisca had a quick feed to Matt Carter in the slot for the marker. Mathieu Aubin collected his second point on the night with the other assist.

Defenseman Dallas Jackson cut the Cincinnati lead back to two with his 8th goal of the season. Jackson ripped the puck from the left wing point past Pickard for the goal at 16:40 of the second period. Milo and Brutlag each collected an assist on the goal for Gwinnett.

The Cyclones ended the second period on top 4-2, outshooting the Gladiators 22-to-19.

The Cyclones proved to be in charge of the third period as Aubin scored two goals for Cincinnati. A little over a minute into the final period, Aubin found the puck in the crease to beat Zapolski and give the Cyclones a 5-2 lead. His third goal for the night came from an empty netter with just 45 seconds left in the game to secure the 6-3 win.

The Gladiators rookie Jacob Drewiske notched his first professional goal at 9:02 to cut the lead to 5-3 but it wasn't enough for Gwinnett. Milo and Murovich each added a second point on the night with the assists.

The Gladiators will host the Greenville Road Warriors Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. to continue the St. Patrick's Day Weekend Celebration.

The Gladiators are the ECHL Affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres and the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League and are members of the ECHL, the Premier "AA" Hockey League and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
