March 5, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
DULUTH, GA - The Gwinnett Gladiators continued their winning ways Saturday night with a 3-0 win against the Trenton Devils at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. This is their fifth consecutive win, with two coming against the Devils last weekend.
Rookie goaltender Chris Carrozzi returned from AHL Chicago in time to make the start, and certainly made up for lost time stopping 27 shots for his second shutout of the season.
The win boosted the Glads (27-25-7) all the way up to the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race, while the Devils (21-32-6) stay mired in the conference cellar.
Akim Aliu scored the only goal in the first period on a shorthanded breakaway going five-hole against former Gwinnett goaltender Dave Caruso to give the Glads a 1-0 lead at the 15:21 mark. Aliu now has at least a point in 11 of 15 games since joining Gwinnett.
A powerplay goal from forward Kyle Kucharski increased the Glads lead to two at the 5:21 mark in the second period. This would mark his second tally against his former team since joining the Gladiators. At the end of forty minutes the score remained 2-0 with the Glads outshooting the Devils 18-6 in the second.
With only 44 seconds remaining in the third Andy Brant rubbed salt in the wound, earning his 16th tally of the season with an empty net goal to seal a 3-0 win.
Gwinnett held Trenton to 0-f-r5 on the man advantage while the Gladiators managed to go 1-for-4.
Both teams are back in action Sunday at the Arena at Gwinnett Center at 4:05 p.m.
