Gladiators Slay Devils, 3-0

Duluth, GA - Behind a 27-save shutout by Chris Carrozzi and three unanswered goals, the Gwinnett Gladiators defeated the Trenton Devils, 3-0, Saturday at Arena at Gwinnett Center.
Akim Aliu, Kyle Kucharski and Andy Brandt supplied the goals for the Gladiators, who improved to 27-22-2-5 and gained sole possession of seventh place in the Eastern Conference by winning their fifth straight game.
Roswell, GA native Dave Caruso was stellar in making 44 saves on 46 shots in a game where the Devils were outshot 36-13 over the final two periods, but took the hard-luck loss, as Trenton was shut out for the first time since November 24 at Florida.
The game-winning goal was scored with just under five minutes remaining in the first period, when Akim Aliu scored a shorthanded breakaway goal off a leading pass from Patrick Galivan. The strike was the 10th shorthanded goal of the season for the Gladiators, who had entered the night having allowed the most shorthanded goals in the Eastern Conference.
In the second period, two penalties by Justin Coutu and Martin Nolet six seconds apart gave Gwinnett a five-on-three power-play opportunity, where former Devil Kyle Kucharski expanded the Gladiators' lead to 2-0 by scoring his second goal in the last week against his former team. Andy Brandt made the sharp cross-ice feed to the backdoor to record the primary assist.
Although the Devils outshot Gwinnett by a 14-11 clip in the first period, the Gladiators carried play for large stretches in the game's second half. The Glads killed each of Trenton's five power plays and sealed their 3-0 win when Brandt scored an empty-net goal with 44 seconds left in the third period.
The Devils conclude the three-game southern portion of their five-game road trip by finishing the season series with Gwinnett at 4:05 p.m.
