Trenton Devils News Release
Greenville, SC - After Jimmy Kilpatrick tied the game with 1:28 left in the third period, Mark Voakes scored 3:55 into overtime to lift the Greenville Road Warriors to a 3-2 win over the Trenton Devils Friday at BI-LO Center.
Shane Harper also scored for Greenville and Nicola Riopel made 26 saves on 28 shots for the South Division-leading Road Warriors, who improved to 36-20-2-1.
Despite a strong effort in which he made 35 saves on 38 shots, Dave Caruso lost in his first game with Trenton since January 9. Ryan Ginand and Kory Nagy were the Devils' goal scorers, while Trenton fell to 21-32-1-4.
Shane Harper gave the Road Warriors a 1-0 lead just 1:42 into the first period by sweeping the rebound of a Marc-Andre Bourdon shot past Dave Caruso on a net mouth scramble. The goal was Harper's 15th of the season, while Bourdon got his first assist with Greenville after the former Philadelphia Flyers draft pick spent the first five months of the season with AHL-Adirondack.
The score remained 1-0 Greenville until Ryan Ginand extended his team-lead in goals (26) at 5:41 of the second period by sneaking the puck under Riopel's pad, after circling behind the net. Trevor Kell and Martin Nolet assisted on Ginand's 64th point of the year, fourth most in the ECHL.
The score remained 1-1 until Kory Nagy gave the Devils their first lead by rifling a shot off the rush from the right-wing faceoff dot just inside the right post. Nagy's unassisted strike was his ninth of the season and the seventh shorthanded goal by a Trenton player this season. Friday's contest was Nagy's first with Trenton since February 23 at Reading when he recorded one goal and one assist before getting called up to AHL-Albany for three games.
After the Devils held Greenville in check for most of the third period, the Road Warriors pulled their goalie while already on a four-on-three power play in the final two minutes and after Dave Caruso made a save on Wes Cunningham, Jimmy Kilpatrick snuck the rebound past Caruso to tie the game with 1:28 left in regulation.
Kilpatrick's late third-period goal set the stage for Voakes' goal in overtime, which lifted the Road Warriors to a 3-2 win in the only contest between Greenville and Trenton this season.
The Devils are back in action Saturday when they open a two-game series in Gwinnett against the Gladiators. Opening faceoff Saturday is 7:05 p.m. and Sunday's contest begins at 4:05 p.m.
