Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Still Streaking: Kevin Doell had a goal and an assist in the Gladiators 5-4 win on Saturday over Florence to extend his point-scoring streak to 7 games. Doell tallied two assists in each of the Gladiators two games before the holiday break and has continued to produce since returning from the break.
Getting Goals: Gladiators forward Chris Durno has picked up a goal in each of the Gladiators games this past week and has a 3 game goal-scoring streak. Durno added his 8th goal of the season on Saturday after he has his 7th on Wednesday and 6th on Tuesday.
On the Road: With the Gladiators 5-4 win over Florence on Saturday, the Gladiators broke a 3 game losing streak away from the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Prior to Saturday's win, the Gladiators last win on the road was a 4-0 shutout at Augusta on December 13th.
Big Impact: David Kaczowka played in his first game with the Gladiators in the team's 5-4 win at Florence on Saturday. Kaczowka tallied a goal and had 21 penalty minutes in the win for the Gladiators including a fighting major early in the first period.
Shorty: Phil Lewandowski tallied the Gladiators 6th shorthanded goal of the season in Saturday's 5-4 win on Saturday. Lewandowski's tally was the first shorthanded goal of the season for the Gladiators on the road in the win.
Goals, Goals, Goals: The Gladiators set a team single game high for goals in a game with 7 against the Augusta Lynx in Tuesday night's win. The Gladiators broke their previous high of 5 goals in a game set in four previous outings.
Power Play: The Gladiators power play continues to be productive for the Gladiators. They tallied more than one power play goal in three of their last five games. In their first 29 games, the Gladiators had just two games with more than one power play goal.
Nascar Night: Catch the red #9 "Awesome Bill from Dawsonville" Dodge on display at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Friday, January 9th when the Gladiators look for revenge against the Columbus Cottonmouths at 7:35 p.m.
Teddy Bear Toss: Mark your calendars for the Gladiators Teddy Bear Toss for charity on Saturday, January 17th. Toss a teddy bear on the ice following the Gladiators first goal. All the teddy bears tossed onto the ice will be donated to local charities.
Community Update:
Gladiators Hockey Clinic at the Duluth Ice Forum â the Gladiators Staff as well as head coach Jeff Pyle and the team will be holding a hockey clinic for the youth hockey program on Tuesday, January 6th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ice Forum. Duluth Merchants Association â Gladiators Director of Community Relations Jim Hall will be representing the Gladiators at the Duluth Merchants Association's monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 6th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Contact Albert Marquez at (770) 623-6069 for more information about the Duluth Merchants Association.
Buford Auto Plaza â Maximus the Mascot will be at Buford Auto Plaza on Saturday, January 10th from Noon until 3 p.m. taking part in a NASCAR promotion.
Discover Mills â "Winter Carnival" â Join Gladiators Director of Community Relations Jim Hall as was Maximus the Mascot at the Discover Mills "Winter Carnival" on Saturday and Sunday January 10th and 11th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the "Winter Carnival" contact Heather Rittner at (678) 847-5000. Selected players will also be at the event on Sunday.

December 30th, Gladiators 7, Augusta 2 â W
Cam Brown deflected a Brandon Dietrich shot from the point at 7:35 of the first period to give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead. The Gladiators took a 2-0 lead before the close of the first period as Steve Slonina slipped past the Augusta defense and roofed a one-handed shot over the shoulder of Augusta netminder Andy Kollar. Anthony Aquino's 12 goal of the season gave the Gladiators a 3-0 lead at 2:58 of the second period. Augusta got on the board on a 5-on-3 power play as Wes Swinson ripped a slap shot from the point past Garnett at 4:19 of the second. The Gladiators regained the three-goal lead as Cam Brown added his second goal of the night at 10:24 of the second. Phil Lewandowski pushed the Gladiators lead to 5-1 with 53 seconds left in the second period as he ripped a centering pass past Kollar. Fifty-one seconds into the third period, Augusta cut the Gladiators lead to 5-2 as Josh Bennett slipped a puck past Garnett. Anthony Aquino tallied his second goal of the night at 2:29 of the third period to regain the Gladiators 4 goal margin. Chris Durno rounded out the scoring as he deflected a Troy Milam slap shot from the point at 11:03 of the final period.
December 31st, Roanoke 6, Gladiators 4 â L
The Gladiators took a 1-0 lead as Rick Emmett slid down the right wing boards and ripped a centering pass from Anthony Aquino past Roanoke netminder Jason Wolfe. Roanoke tied the game up 43 seconds later on their first shot of the game on the power play as Joe Dusbabek let a bad angle shot go that beat Gladiators netminder Mike Buckley on the short side. Andrew McPherson gave the Express a 2-1 lead at 4:50 of the first period as he slid into the slot and ripped a shot past Buckley. Phil Lewandowski tied the game up on a tic-tac-toe passing play in the slot with Anthony Aquino and Kris Goodjohn. Gwinnett took a 3-2 lead with 1:10 remaining in the first period with a Kevin Doell snap-shot right over the shoulder of Wolfe. Roanoke answered 47 seconds later as Shawn Limpright added a power play goal. Steve Burgess gave the Express a 4-3 lead going into first intermission as he rook a centering pass from Peter Cermak and beat Buckley with just 6 seconds left in the first period. In the third, the Gladiators tied the game up at 4-4 on a goal by Chris Durno as he turned a centering pass behind Wolf. Roanoke took the lead for good as Shawn Limpright beat Garnett at 11:50 of the third. Rick Kowalski added an insurance goal for the Express to give Roanoke a 6-4 lead as he flipped a puck off the shoulder of Garnett at 14:37 of the third.
January 3rd, Gladiators 5, Florence 4 â W
Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead as Phil Lewandowski fed Blue Bennefield in the slot and beat Pride netminder Matt Underhill at 5:12 of the first period on the power play. Florence tied the contest on a Craig Brunel slap shot from the slot at 9:17 of the opening period. The Gladiators took a 2-1 lead on Phil Lewandowski's shorthanded tally at 5:01 of the second period. Jeff Szwez ripped a shot from the slot over Garnett's shoulder at 7:05 of the second to tie the game at two. Florence took a 3-2 lead three minutes later as Wes Goldie, wide open in the left wing circle, beat Garnett with a slap-shot. David Kaczowka equalized the contest at three as he pulled the puck out of a pile and flipped a shot over Underhill at 12:13 of the second period. Steve Slonina pulled Underhill out of the Florence net and fed Chris Durno in the slot to set up the Gladiators fourth goal of the game and gave the Gladiators a 4-3 lead with 3:50 left in the second. Nicholas Corbeil slid into an opening in the high slot and fired a shot past Garnett at 18:12 of the second. Kevin Doell extended his point-scoring streak to 7 games as he scored the game winner on a slap-shot past Underhill on the power play at 18:55 of the second.

The first of three home games in the month of January for the Gladiators. Gwinnett has won both games this season at the Arena at Gwinnett Center against Columbus, a 3-1 win on December 5th and a 4-3 decision on November 6th.
Saturday, December 10th, @ Ciolumbus, 7:35 p.m.
Second game of a true home-and-home series with the Cottonmouths. The home team has had the advantage in the season series with Columbus winning both games in the series in Columbus including a 5-3 win in the Gladiators last game before the holiday break on December 21st.
