Another Perfect Week in the Books

January 5, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO –– The San Diego Gulls are STILL in fourth place! Can you believe it? They've won 10 of their last 11 games and are unbeaten in 17 of 21 overall. So how can the Gulls sill be looking up at the same three teams?

WEEK IN REVIEW:

San Diego began the week with a win over the Long Beach Ice Dogs. The Gulls then hosted the Idaho Steelheads and Las Vegas Wranglers. Two showdowns... two more victories. So the Blue and Orange may be in fourth place – still – but are now only four points behind Idaho for the top spot in the Pacific Division. San Diego still has games in hand on all three teams ahead of them and has the fifth-best winning percentage in the entire ECHL (.690)...

Dec. 28 vs. Long Beach

The Gulls' dominance over the Ice Dogs continued with a 4-2 victory against their Southern California rival. San Diego jumped out to a 1-0 lead before Long Beach tied it midway through the second. Mark Pederson and David Neale scored 29 seconds apart late in the middle frame to put San Diego up 3-1. Long Beach cut it to one late in the third, but Sylvain Deschatelets put the game away moments later.

Jan. 2 vs. Idaho

Clayton Read had four points, while Chris Gobert and Greg Barber chipped in with three points apiece, leading the Gulls to a 6-1 thumping of the Steelheads. It was 2-1 halfway through the game before the floodgates opened. San Diego scored four unanswered goals and cruised the rest of the way.

Jan. 3 vs. Las Vegas

Pederson tallied twice, Deschatelets had four assists and Billy Tibbetts had three helpers, lifting San Diego to an important 5-2 win against the Wranglers. The game was tied 1-1 after the first period, but it was all Gulls from there. The Gulls dominated the rest of the game and could've buried Vegas if not for the spectacular goaltending of Marc Magliarditi. The Wranglers netminder turned away 36 of 41 shots, a chunk of those made at point-blank range.

THIS WEEK:

San Diego finishes its five-game homestand Tuesday against the Texas Wildcatters, which will see the return of former Gull Ashlee Langdone. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Gulls then play three games this weekend in Anchorage, Alaska. All three begin at 8 p.m. (PST).
