BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads tasted first place, wanted it back and got it back...at least for a day. All ECHL teams are idle today, leaving the Steelheads atop the Pacific Division, alone for the first time, this season.

The Steelheads play an exhibition game against the Japan National Team on Tuesday, January 6th for an international match up. The game is the last of the USA tour for the Japan team before returning home. In addition to the Idaho Steelheads, the Japan team played the ECHL's Reading Royals, Trenton Titans and Long Beach Ice Dogs to gain exposure and experience in preparation for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

RECORD

Idaho begins this week in first place in the ECHL's Pacific Division with 21-11-2, and 44 points. Las Vegas and Alaska are tied for second, each with 43 points. Idaho is currently enjoying a 6-game home win streak, and is 7-1-2 in its last 10 games.

GAME RECAPS:

IDAHO 3, LAS VEGAS 2 (SO)

BOISE, Idaho (Ticker) -- Andrei Vasilyev scored the decisive shootout goal to help the Idaho Steelheads edge the Las Vegas Wranglers, 3-2. Vasilyev tied the game at 2-2 with a power-play goal late in the second period and assisted on Jan Kopecky's tally in the first. Dave Cornacchia handed out a pair of assists for Idaho, which is unbeaten over its last six games. Dan Ellis stopped 18 of 20 shots to notch his 10th win of the season. Jason McBain recorded a goal and an assist for Las Vegas, which has dropped two of its last three games after going 8-1 over the previous nine. Marc Magliarditi turned away 41 of 43 shots in the loss for the Wranglers.

IDAHO 3, LAS VEGAS 1

BOISE, Idaho (Ticker) -- Derek Paget scored a pair of goals to lead the Idaho Steelheads past the Las Vegas Wranglers, 3-1. Paget gave Idaho the lead for good at 2-1 midway through the second period and added an insurance goal with 2:19 remaining in regulation. Blair Allison stopped 29 of 30 shots to continue his home dominance, improving to 8-0-0 with a 1.74 goals against average at the Bank of America Centre. Chris Slater tallied in the second period for the Steelheads, who are unbeaten over their last seven games (6-0-1). Chris Kenady recorded a shorthanded goal for Las Vegas, which has scored just seven times over the last four games. Marc Magliarditi gave up three goals on 28 shots to take the loss.

SAN DIEGO 6, IDAHO 1

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego's Clayton Read had four points, while former Steelhead Chris Gobert and Greg Barber each scored three points apiece, leading the Gulls to a 6-1 victory over Idaho. San Diego led by 2-1 halfway through the game before the scoring four unanswered goals.

FRESNO 5, IDAHO 4 (OT)

FRESNO, California (Ticker) -- Greg Bullock scored in overtime to lift the Fresno Falcons over the Idaho Steelheads, 5-4. Bullock, who assisted on a second-period goal by Boris Protsenko, collected his team-leading 16th goal with just a second remaining in the extra period. Mike Sandbeck snapped a 2-2 tie for Fresno 2:49 into the third period and added a shorthanded marker 8:40 later. Lance Galbraith, who finished with a hat trick, then tallied back-to-back goals within a 53-second span to retie the score at 4-4 for Idaho. Nolan Schaefer stopped 44 shots, including a pair in overtime, for the win, the Falcons' first in four meetings with the Steelheads this season (1-3-0). Zenon Konopka finished with three assists for Idaho, which has lost two straight. Blair Allison had 21 saves in defeat.

IDAHO 4, FRESNO 0

FRESNO, California (Ticker) -- Dan Ellis recorded his second shutout in 21 appearances as the Idaho Steelheads defeated the Fresno Falcons, 4-0. Ellis turned aside 13 shots in the second period and 26 overall for his 11th win of the year. David Cornacchia assisted on a pair of first-period goals and capped the scoring midway through the third for Idaho, which improved to 7-1-2 over its last 10 games. Cornacchia now has 12 assists in his last 11 contests. Warren Peters also had a goal and two assists for the Steelheads, who are now 18-10-2 within the Pacific Division. Terry Friesen, who had 35 saves, fell to 1-12-2 since November 19.

IN THE NET: Goaltender Dan Ellis has a record of 11-8-1, 2.52 goals against average and .909 save percentage. Blair Allison is 10-3-0, with a 2.48 average and .906 save percentage.

SCORING LEADERS: Jan Kopecky (F) continues to the team in scoring with 30 points (15 goals, 15 assists). Zenon Konopka (F) is second with 28 points - 6 goals and 22 assists. Dave Cornacchia (D) is third with 27 points (5 goals and 22 assists), and leads the team in points for defenseman. Cornacchia is tied for eighth overall in the League in scoring by defensemen.

PP and PK: Idaho's power play is ranked 21st overall, having scored 30 goals in 200 chances (15%). The team's overall penalty kill drops to 28th overall at 79.4%, allowing 36 in just 175 attempts.

OF NOTE: Idaho's Miguel Delisle (ECHL Player of the Week December 15th-21st) leads the League in shooting percentage with .244%, scoring 11 goals in 45 shots...Delisle is also tied for first in power play goals with 9, and is the only ECHL player to have tallied multiple hat tricks this season (12/17/03 vs BAK and 12/19/03 vs BAK)...Lance Galbraith also tallied a hat trick on 01/03/04 @ Fresno in the first Steelheads game at Fresno's new Save Mart Center.
