Las Vegas Wranglers News Release
Boise, ID - The Las Vegas Wranglers (20-2-4, 44 points) were edged by the Idaho Steelheads (11-9-7, 29 points) 4-3 in overtime at the Qwest Arena on Friday night. Idaho's Lance Galbraith scored a power-play goal just 1:38 into overtime, capping off a two-goal rally for a Steelheads overtime victory. Despite the overtime loss, the Wranglers made team history by extending their streak to 20 games without a loss in regulation (16-0-4). Forwards Brandon Kaleniecki and Adam Cracknell each had two assists in the team's first overtime loss of the season. All-Star goalie Daniel Manzato stopped 27 in his first defeat of the season (11-0-1). Defenseman Mike Madill, forwards Sean Owens and Aki Setsonen added goals for the Wranglers. Las Vegas will play at Idaho again on Saturday at 6:10 pm (PST).
Idaho scored the only goal in the first period of play, taking a 1-0 lead into the second period. The Steelheads broke a scoreless tie with just over five minutes remaining in the period. Idaho's Blake Forsythe scored his second goal of the season off a loose-puck scramble in front of the Las Vegas net. The Steelheads outshot Las Vegas 9-7 in the opening period.
In the second period, the Wranglers tied the game 1-1 five minutes into the period as Sean Owens scored his fourth goal of the season. Right wing Adam Cracknell set up the play from behind the Idaho net, as Owens beat Idaho goalie Kellen Briggs. The Steelheads regained their lead when Taggert Desmet redirected a Jeremy Scherlinck shot from the point. Desmet's ninth goal of the season at 10:48, giving Idaho a 2-1 lead. Las Vegas tied the game 2-2 with only 2:12 left on the clock. Left wing Aki Seitsonen scored off a rebound of a Jason Jozsa shot for his fourth goal of the season. The Wranglers outshot Idaho 15-11 in the middle period.
In the third period, defenseman Mike Madill gave Las Vegas the team's only lead of the game with his first goal of the season. Madill's power-play tally was a blast from the point, through traffic, that beat Briggs for the 3-2 Wranglers lead. Idaho pulled goalie Kellen Briggs with 1:55 remaining in the game for the extra attacker. Off the following face-off in the Wranglers zone, Idaho forward Mark Bomersback scored with 1:49 remaining. Bomersback's 16th of the season tied the game 3-3, forcing overtime.
In the extra frame, Wranglers winger Shawn Limpright was whistled for hooking, giving Idaho a power play. The Steelheads collected their first power-play goal of the night just 40-seconds later. Winger Lance Galbraith scored the game-winning goal at 1:38 of overtime, giving the Steelheads a 4-3 victory.
The team will stay in Boise to face the Idaho Steelheads for one more game this Saturday night at 6:10 pm (PST) at Qwest Arena. Las Vegas will return home on Thursday, December 27th at 7:05 pm to host the Steelheads.
