Former Nailer Konopka makes NHL debut

WHEELING, WV - Former Wheeling Nailer Zenon Konopka made his NHL debut last night in The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim 3-2 victory over Phoenix. Konopka was recalled from the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League.

Konopka, 24, from Niagara Falls, Ontario, played for Wheeling during the 2002-03 season. In 2002-03 with Wheeling, Konopka was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team and ranked second among ECHL rookies with 48 assists and ranked third in rookie scoring with 70 points. Selected to the 2003 ECHL All-Star Game where he had an assist in the Northern Conference's 8-2 win, Konopka led the Nailers in points (70), assists (48) and plus-minus rating (+9) while tying for the team lead with four game-winning goals. He was called up to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) after the season dressing for 4 games and registering an assist.

Konopka had eight points (2+6), 10 penalty minutes and a plus-minus rating of +8 in seven games with Portland.

The Wheeling Nailers have now had 26 players play in the NHL. The ECHL has seen 268 players make the eventual move to the NHL with more ex-Nailers than any other team.
