San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO -- Halloween came a couple days early for the San Diego Gulls, as a few of their former players came back to haunt their former squad. Mathieu Chouinard, Dean Tiltgen and Cory Pecker were the difference makers, leading their new Phoenix Roadrunners squad to a weekend sweep over the Blue and Orange.

WEEK IN REVIEW:

Oct. 24 @ Alaska:

The Gulls started the week on a positive note, defeating the Aces 3-1 for their first win of the season. Tyler Weiman stopped 34 shots and San Diego broke a 1-1 tie in the third period en route to the victory. San Diego's penalty killing was also key, turning away all nine Alaska power plays.

Oct. 28 @ Phoenix:

Chouinard was stellar in net for the Roadrunners, stopping 41 of 43 shots, and Pecker picked up two points as Phoenix beat the Gulls 4-2. Newcomer Richard Keyes gave San Diego an early 1-0 lead just 45 seconds into the game, but the Roadrunners scored three unanswered goals to go ahead 3-1. Keyes netted his second of the night to cut the deficit back to one, but Phoenix added an empty-netter.

Oct. 29 @ Phoenix:

Tiltgen notched two goals and an assist, Pecker picked up two helpers and Chouinard turned aside 35 shots en route to a 7-1 Roadrunner win, completing the two-game weekend sweep. Phoenix jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Steve Hildenbrand put San Diego on the board midway through the second. The Roadrunners tacked on one more in the second and three more in third to cruise to victory. Five of Phoenix's goal came via the power play.

Individual Notes:

Hildenbrand has a point in four of five games this season to lead the Gulls with four points overall (2g, 2a)... Keyes has three points (2g, 1a) in two games with San Diego... San Diego native Aaron McKenzie made his professional debut Saturday (he had seven saves)... Goaltender Tom Lawson's wife gave birth to a baby girl Saturday morning. He should be able to re-join the Gulls Wednesday in Long Beach...

Team Notes:

The Gulls are 3-for-39 on the power play so far this season (7.7 percent)... After San Diego's road trip, 10 of its next 13 games will be at home... Weiman stopped Pecker on a penalty shot Saturday. The last time the Gulls allowed a penalty shot was Dec. 29, 2004...

San Diego's seven-game road trip to start the 2005-06 season continues Wednesday against the Long Beach Ice Dogs, with game-time set for 7 p.m. The Gulls finish the trek Friday in Bakersfield before opening the home schedule Saturday, Nov. 5 against the Stockton Thunder.
