Early Lead Not Enough To Boost Tides Over Sounds

April 11, 2023 - International League (IL)
Norfolk Tides News Release

NASHVILLE, Tn. --- The Norfolk Tides (7-2) fell to the Nashville Sounds (6-4), 8-5, in 11 innings on Tuesday at First Horizon Park. The Tides were up five runs into the seventh inning, but Nashville tied it back with five runs themselves between their seventh and eighth innings. The game would go to extras where the Sounds hit a walk-off three-run home run.

Norfolk exploded for four runs to start the the game. They loaded the bases immediately, giving Joey Ortiz the chance to score the first run with a sacrifice fly. That brought up Ryan O'Hearn, who belted his fourth home run of the season for a three-run shot.

The Tides added one more in the second when Ortiz hit an RBI triple to make it 5-0. Norfolk starter Drew Rom would hold the Sounds' bats silent on the other end, tossing six scoreless innings for a quality start. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out four on 83 pitches, 59 for strikes.

Nashville would get the best of Norfolk's bullpen, however. Jon Singleton and Tyler Naquin each homered in the seventh for a total of three runs. Keston Hiura tied the game in the eighth with a two-run shot himself, making it 5-5.

The game would head to extras, with neither team scoring in the 10th. After the Tides went scoreless again in the 11th, Nashville walked off on a three-run homer by Alex Jackson to win, 8-5.

The two teams return to action tomorrow night, with the Tides scheduled to start RHP Chris Vallimont (0-0, 0.00) and the Sounds slated to start LHP Robert Gasser (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
