Drewiske Gets The Call From The Kings

March 20, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manchester Monarchs News Release

The Los Angeles Kings, the parent club of the Manchester Monarchs, have activated forward Justin Williams off the injured reserve list, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. The Kings today also recalled defenseman Davis Drewiske from the Monarchs.

Williams, 27, was acquired March 4 in a three-way deal with the Edmonton Oilers and Carolina Hurricanes (Patrick O'Sullivan was sent to Edmonton and a second-round selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft was sent to Carolina). Williams suffered a broken hand during the Carolina-Buffalo game on February 15 and has missed 15 games (eight with Carolina and seven with the Kings).

The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder from Cobourg, Ontario, had 10 points (3-7=10) and nine penalty minutes in 32 games with the Hurricanes this season. He was a member of Carolina's Stanley Cup winning team in 2006 and was an All-Star in 2007 when he scored a career-high 33 goals. He has played in 491 career NHL games with the Hurricanes and the Philadelphia Flyers, the team that selected him in the first round (28th overall) in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, recording 316 points (124-192=316) and 325 penalty minutes. In 42 career playoff games he has 24 points (8-16=24) and 46 penalty minutes. He has also represented Canada at three World Championship tournaments.

Williams' two finest NHL seasons came in 2005-06 and 2006-07. In 2005-06, he played in all 82 games and had a career-best 76 points (31-45=76). The next season, he also played in all 82 games and had 67 points (33-34=67). He signed a five-year contract with the Hurricanes prior to the 2006-07 season.

Drewiske, 24, had zero points, two penalty minutes and a plus-1 rating in five games with the Kings during his first call-up this season (February 2-15). The 6-foot-2, 215-pound native of Hudson, Wisconsin made his Kings/NHL debut at Ottawa on February 3. In 61 games with the Monarchs this season, the rookie defenseman has 14 points (1-13=14), 95 penalty minutes and a plus-5 rating. His plus-5 rating is tied for third on Manchester and his 95 penalty minutes are fourth on the squad. The Kings signed Drewiske as an unrestricted free agent on April 1, 2008.

The Monarchs travel to the MassMutual Center to play the Springfield Falcons at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 20.
